This very well could be the best last chance for Phil to win the U.S Open to complete the Grand Slam.
He has won here 5 times here and the last one was just 4 months ago.

But he is facing a tough field.

  • Tiger is back to his patient, methodical, wait for everyone to beat themselves form.
  • Koepka does not know how to play a major badly.
  • Rory, the last thing Phil needed was Rory to remind himself of what he can do to a golf course.(see yesterday)
  • Real threats that have won here ..Dustin Johnson, Jordon Spieth, Brant Snedeker.

Should be good.

Yup should be Phil’s last chance at glory. This course sets up well as distance won’t be a huge factor.

Tiger was swinging very well at The Memorial, he knows how to win at Pebble as well.

Brooks looks shaky with the putter. Didn’t putt well this week on those poe greens, Pebble won’t be any easier with their poe.

Rory certainly looks back to form. He’s streaky, and playing some great golf. He’ll undoubtedly be in the mix.

It's always more anticipation when the big guns are playing well leading up to a major...you mentioned enough of the names already and that's a good half dz guys.

IDK if it's Phil's last chance to complete the grand slam but it's starting to look that way as we all know Winged Foot will be tough. That also was the scene of maybe Phil's worst major meltdown.

Was that the one where he hit some metal rail or the drive left on 18?

That was painful to watch. Both him and Montgomerie double the last hole for Ogilvy to back into a US Open victory. I do give Olgivy credit for making a clutch putt on 18 when coming down the stretch, don't want to take anything away from him. But Phil shipped that tournament to him.

Yeah...I don't recall if he hit a metal rail or not, but he did go left. The biggest thing I remember was him taking driver off the tee when he only needed par to win, ended up making dbl going down that left rough.

Out of all the USOs Phil had a chance to win, that one has to haunt him more than any other I'm guessing. Phil is pretty anti-USGA setup these days, so maybe the setup is already in his head.

It would be nice to see Phil close out his career with a grand slam.

Yea, 2006 US Open at Wingfoot, that is where he went left at 18.

I forget where he hit some shot and hit a metal railing ...I thought it was one the 2nd place Us open finishes.

I too would like to see Phil finally win his national championship. He sent his message to the USGA last year how he feels about them, he has a lot of other top players backing him. Read a bunch of anonymous responses in last month's Golf Digest how close several top names were to boycotting the USGA. The USGA doesn't listen to input from the players or PGA on how to run their tournament, and they have so many black eyes to their reputation. If they don't get it right this year then there's going to be consequences I feel going forward.

Maybe the USGA takes some of this input to heart, maybe they don't, but imo the only player that would consider truly boycotting the USO if he was even eligible imo would be John Daly.

Mickelson lost all credibility on that front when he lost his mind and hit that putt before it stopped rolling last year

Phil is still a fan favorite and most folks have already forgotten about that bad decision.

Nutty for sure, I thought he'd lost his mind too initially, but I now feel that he knew exactly what he was doing and should have been DQ'd. Or he should've withdrawn...that would made an even bigger statement which was his objective all along.

Yes Phil has issues with the USGA.

I believe he said he knew the penalty would be less than the strokes it would have taken if he let it roll down that hill. His reaction backs that up too ..the second he saw it going down the hill he took off.

Still not a great moment for Phil.

Yep...the USGA has deserved it on occasion, but we wonder why he hasn't won a USO yet.

You have to wonder if the USGA is in his head.
Six runner-up finishes in this event for Phil.

No it wasn't, but being a superstar he was able to move passed it. This would be dogging another lessor known player for weeks.

Circling back to a topic we discussed a few days ago...Rory is playing well, but just miss a green with a wedge...something we talked about. Will have to follow that.
