I see the NCAA is stretching the definition of "hardship". I don't really care, but they should just remove the rule entirely if Martell is the new precedent. Lose your spot, transfer.

I guess if you squint hard enough the fact OSU added a player almost certain to surpass him on the depth chart that wasn't there when he made his decision to go to OSU you could conceivably make the argument.


But with all that said no one saw Haskins becoming a first round NFL pick after year one either. So Martell would have sat either way had that not happened.

I think getting a new coaching staff would be the more applicable "hardship"

No reason anymore that the transfer rule should even be in place. I'm extremely happy for Martell. He committed to play for Urban, and then he retired and it was clear the new HC didn't have him in his plans. College football is big business. I'm not for paying kids, but with the amount of money schools get for these kids, you could at least make it easier for them to put themselves in the best position to succeed.

As it's been said, if a coach can up and leave a school on a whim and take a job elsewhere, kids should be able to be too. And correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most of these kids on 1-year scholarships that just renew every year? If so, it shouldn't be a big deal for them to transfer elsewhere and get another 1-year scholarship.

I know with cost of living/attendance the year to year schollie deal is moving towards fully guaranteed. I believe the PAC already does that

Technically, I think so... Though pretty much all schools honor it for 4+years, and some "guarantee" it for 4

I don't see a problem with it. If anything, it hopefully keeps schools/coaches more honest to recruits. As I said in another thread, if Mattison & Washington can up and leave Michigan all of a sudden to coach at Ohio State, then why can't a player? It's not like Mattison has to sit out coaching for a year.

How do you figure? Any transfer that has come in has had to sit out a year per the old NCAA rules unless they are a grad transfer. Certainly not this immediate grant of eligibility. Keep in mind, I’m not completely bashing it. Just pointing out the landscape has greatly shifted.

They are working in the same field, towards the same goal, and one part of the contract is bogus. You can find many examples of that in life

The coaching thing was just a sidenote anyway. The rule is dumb. I remember a LB transferred out of Ohio State to go back home bc a family member got sick. Had to sit out for a year. That's just stupid. Limit the number of transfers to prevent kids from being crazy fickle but the first one should absolutely not be penalized

Because the schools need 0 protection? That's what BOTH the coaches buyouts and the players contracts are based on - NOT EACH OTHER.

It's the schools that invest all the money and resources into the coaches AND kids. Would you rather they charged millions of dollars to the kids to change the way they do coaches?

You can say they deserve whatever, but bringing up the coaches stuff is just plain ignorant and irrelevant.
