Much of Boston's trade ammo is tied up in this coming draft, currently the #6, #13, and #24 picks in what is considered a top heavy draft. Maybe Reddish is still available at 6? Are those picks really worth enough if Boston starts pulling back young players? New Orleans is going to want Tatum, Brown, and Ojeleye. Theis, Rozier, and Morris are free agents and can't S&T as part of a package deal. Is New Orleans going to want $30M of old Al Horford, or $67M of Hayward over two years? Doubtful.

The so-called advantage of the Celtics if this continues to the new league year is hazy at best IMO.

A rebuilding team loves decent draft picks. The fact that they aren't likely to be top 3 means little if we're comparing against the Lakers... because it's still worlds better than what L.A. can offer.

And that's just talking the draft picks. You leave out Robert Williams III as a decent trade chip... throw him in with Brown and Smart and we're talking 'better than L.A.' again.

And that's before we even mention the possibility of Tatum being included.

If I understand the situation correctly (and I may not), the problem is that the draft is June 20th and Kyrie isn't an FA until July 1st. So the Celtics would have to trade Kyrie before they can trade those picks.

You're looking at is as the Lakers are currently constructed and forgetting that if they get AD in a trade, they will have cap space for a 3rd max guy.

If the Lakers trade for AD, they will look very different than they do right now. Lebron, AD, a 3rd max guy and role players would be contenders.

Those picks may not even happen this year. Grizzlies pick currently would be deferred to next year, since they 6th worst (top 8 protected). Clippers pick is lottery protected, and they have fallen to the 8th seed, 2 games ahead of 9th (Lakers). They could only have their own pick (currently 24th) and the Kings pick (currently 13th, one slot ahead of the Lakers' pick.

It's not "possibility of Tatum being included" either. If the Pelicans wait until the summer to include the Celtics, it's directly for Tatum.
