She has until she's 22 to decide, but I read that it's questionable whether she will actually have to do so. I read that there actually isn't any law in the books that punishes a person for failing to renounce his/her citizenship in another country.

Also, I read that her father decided early on that she would represent Japan, and that it was because USTA didn't take interest in her at a young age. What I read didn't mention anything about the Japan Nationality Act playing a factor.

This is what baffles me. The black father from Haiti who acquired US residency and citizenship goes abroad to Japan from New York and marries a Japanese woman whose parents refused to allow a black man to marry their daughter to the extent that they had to flee from her parents home to Osaka where they had their two kids/daughters. They then moved back to New York,US when Naomi was only 3 years old and raised by her paternal grandparents.

Her black father saw in 1999 the famous black tennis family (Williams) grand tennis plan and decided to follow it to the teeth since he himself was never versed in tennis just like the Williams family when they started. Naomi's family never saw her maternal grand parents until 15 years later or when Naomi was 11 years old. She was raised in the good ole USA taking advantage of US tennis Academies. Naomi herself even taught Japanese by her mom could only understand but barely speak. All of a sudden the black father decides she is Japanese and should represent Japan rather than good ole USA that she was raised and grew up in? Unbelievable.

many of the top women have been an inconsistent underachieving bunch for a long time, so kerber losing early is not that big of a surprise to me.
