If we are so concerned about philanthropy (the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes), then we should REQUIRE all the P5 teams to pay at least one FCS team every year to come in for a money game. Frickin' teams like USC, Notre Dame, UCLA, etal ain't helping FCS schools in any way. Damn slackers.

Or, if FBS teams are truly concerned about helping FCS teams out, just write 'em a check out of the out of the goodness of their hearts out of the huge payments they receive from their media contracts. That's real philanthropy.

It isn’t about philanthropy. Both sides get a benefit. I don’t think anyone would try to argue that FBS schools do it to be magnanimous.

This shit again?

It's a moot point because the NCAA isn't going to prohibit P5 from playing FCS teams because that would require the actual FCS schools to vote to end the games and that's not happening.

No, a lot of the smaller schools athletic departments would not be able to survive without the money they get from the payday of playing a big name school. Pretty sure some states mandate it as well (always heard that SC does but never cared enough to research it to find out for sure - doesn’t change the premise)
Agree. I hate watching these games, hate scheduling these games and think it is a joke when LSU’s schedule has one of these games. The other side the story is that school juat got a $1/2 million dollar payday, likely making more money in that one game than the rest of their season (in all sports) combined. One game probably helps most of these athletic departments stay afloat for an entire year.

JFC. That wasn’t the OP’s logic, at all. But you in your infinite wisdom put words in his mouth.

"Team's that play FCS teams shouldn't be allowed in the playoffs."

His words, not mine.

I agree...but many, many make it seem like the reason to do it is philanthropic. At least that is the excuse they use.

My response was to such a post.

Sorry IB but this is a dumb position from you.

For what reason? I am cool that you disagree. But at least qualify it. Just doing a drive by 'that's stupid' wasn't really the goal. Just thought with it now being the offseason good time to have threads like this.

I don't mind P5 teams to play ONE fcs a year early in the season as they need the money and P5 teams need a warm up game. But to play 4 fcs teams at home like UGA did this season is just too many, they're padding their record.

No excuses should be made. If a school is playing these teams it should definately impact their SOS and consideration for the playoffs etc. With that being said, it also helps these smaller schools.

I'm a fan of FCS games and don't see any downside. It gives P5 teams a chance to work out kinks and try out plays without risking serious injuries, which is the right way to do that (instead of silly over-enforced targeting rules). It can essentially fund the entire athletic departments for the FCS schools, including non-money making sports (like many women's sports), and give a lot of people the chance to get a higher education (through athletic scholarships) that might not otherwise have the chance to get one. And as someone mentioned, they're required by some state legislatures.

And it's not like scheduling a bad FBS team is any different for an actual play-off contender. They'd blow out 99% of FBS teams too, like Clemson and Alabama did. Do you think Ball State had any more chance to beat Alabama or Clemson than Furman or the Citadel? They would have beaten them all with ease. Hell, DJ, I'm not sure USC could have done as well against Bama as the Citadel did.

If it's boring, don't watch. There are dozens of games on every Saturday. It's no more boring than watching Clemson beat Louisville 77-16.

That's fucking stupid, I'm sorry, but keep pretending playing Ball State is so much better than playing James Madison.

One game against a cupcake should keep teams out of the playoffs?

ND didn't play an FCS opponent, Clemson did. We all saw what happened, but apparently using your logic, ND was better because they played Ball STate and Navy instead of FCS opponents?

If they make a rule where P5 teams can't play FCS teams, that's fine, but if they're allowed, what's the issue? A cupcake is a cupcake.

Yeah, Georgia is gonna play an FCS team next season, they're also gonna play Notre Dame and Georgia Tech in OOC, but if they run the table, keep em out of the playoffs according to OP.

Common sense goes a long ways fellers, use it.
ND has never scheduled an FCS opponent. Only 3 programs can say this, ND, USC, UCLA.

As long as these are buy games for the FCS, they’ll never refuse the money.

I dont care. I just would like to see all non conference cupcake played in September.

Playing them mid November is bullshit.
Not bullshit but it is pussified.

And they need a break from the conference grind. Come on man!

Good for them. Clemson and Bama play one every year, seems to be working out better for them.

Literally no difference between playing them in September and playing them in November.

This I agree with, you shouldn’t be able to schedule all your OOC games as FCS. 1 FCS, 1 lower to mid tier FBS, and two P5 should be the standard.
