I just hope it has come and gone by the time we are ready to contend again.

I appreciate creative thinking and it seems to work, probably easier to find guys that can itvh 2-3 effective innings at a time than quality starting pitching

I think creative thinking is great. I just think as long as the roster stays at 25 it is going to be hard for a contending team to find room for guys who open on a regular basis due to having to go short in other areas. On a short term basis or a start here and there it might work fine, but I can't see having 6 or 7 guys as starters/openers on any kind of long term basis.

It's not designed to replace all starters.

Its designed really to replace backend starters and let you get more out of those poor 4/5 starters because when they start the 3rd time through the order they won't be facing the top of it. They'll likely be towards the middle and trending to the bottom.

Yeah, that is what I thought as well. That is why I included the part about needing 6 or 7 starters/openers on the team.

Something tells me when you have a WS contender that that backend of the rotation won't need too much help.

Openers aren't used much different than any other reliever they would/could still pitch multiple times in a week

In fact i know the rays opened with the same guy on back to back days

The one I thought we may utilize is Springs/Chavez. But yes TJ recovered pitchers may need one every once in a while. If we have legit relief guys in minors they can be moved up and down.
Yes it can potentially shorten bench.

We have room to maneuver this season regardless. No big deal IMO

Will be interesting

Will be interesting if they can't come to a deal with DDJ. Perhaps new staff can get him to be productive despite his previous good intentions. Hope for the best

Nope, no big deal at all this year or next. Let 'em get it out of their system and move on to the next new thing.

Would not be surprised if Gallo goes to right field and Mazara takes 1B. Looks like 1B and 3B not in plans for Gallo

Gallo in right means sharing time with Choo. How will that work out?

with multiple TJ starters(Smyly, Miller, Volquez) like we have now it would make sense to use relief pitchers like Springs and Chavez as openers to allow them to work themselves back into shape

Remember, they said when the season started last year that they were going to keep Gallo at 1B. They change their minds like they were women. A statement by the front office about where a player is going to play doesn't mean a whole lot to me any longer.

I guess, part of the reason for what seems like a complete reversal in course of action in the past, could have been a disagreement between JD and Banny or between JD and Wash. Maybe, they told the new manager that they would dictate to him how players were going to play in the field and all of the flip flopping is over. Maybe, that is why we have a new manager.

I think it is simply an inability to stick with a plan myself, but maybe that will change.

Or, they could just limit their innings as conventional starters and use Springs and Chavez a lot during the 5th and 6th innings. Either way would save their arms. Going the conventional route would allow guys like Chavez and Springs to be used more on a particular night when one of the starters struggles. When used as an opener you don't know how the starter is going to perform so you don't know how many innings Chavez and Springs should pitch.

I don't know if going one way or the other is going to make much of a difference in wins and losses and for the next couple of years win totals don't mean much anyway.

When Soriano didn't want to say the OF JD didn't push the issue and then traded him. Soriano then went somewhere else to play the OF. When Kinsler didn't want to play the OF JD didn't push the issue and eventually traded him. Now Gallo spoke once about 3B not being his idea of where he wanted to play and JD decides not to even consider Gallo at 3B. Players very often get to dictate to this organization where they should be played.

MY was an exception and he whined about it so maybe JD is afraid of every player responding the same way. Maybe Young should be in charge of breaking the news to players that they are going to have to play some position that they would rather not play. lol

Not suggesting it as long term solution but for the 1st 50 to 60 games allowing or limiting the TJ starters innings to allow their arm strength under game conditions makes sense. Chavez and Springs could go 2 or 3 innings a couple of times a week. Yes it would put more load on the other 5 relievers but with the starters we have now that will be happening anyway
