You just can't keep sitting there acting like things are going to change or get better. We're at the end of year 4, and it's yet another 3+ loss season, this one complete with an embarrassing bowl loss. When will the time come when they realize they have all the attributes of a top-end program minus the head coach?

The NFL will save Michigan having to endure another 3 loss season under Harbaugh. One of the teams that will make a run at him will make him an offer he will be encouraged to take. The only way Michigan can keep him is offer a lifetime contract and they might be stupid enough to do it.

When he's coaching Sam Darnold next fall, this will all just seem like a bad dream...

Do you remember what it was like before Harbaugh? I'd say he already saved us. Even with a coaching change (if that's what you're thinking) Michigan's team is stable again. Harbaugh has won 10 games in his first 3/4 seasons. Michigan won 10+ games in 4 total seasons from 2000-2014. No, Harbaugh has not made us a top 5 program in 4 seasons. That's unfortunate. We no longer need major tweaks to succeed, a few minor changes and we could be one of the top 5 teams. Will Harbaugh make those changes? only time will tell.

Let me get this straight - you bring this guy in, who immediately cements himself as some sort of jester or clown with his antics. He sets up some recruiting extravaganza like it's Dick Clark's Rocking NYE, he's climbing trees like an idiot, he's having sleepovers with recruits, he's throwing embarrassing tantrums on the sidelines.

All the while he's:
- 1-7 against michigan' two biggest rivals
- 1-3 in bowl games
- Won 0 conference titles
- Played for 0 conference titles

It has been 4 years, and despite making him one of the highest paid coaches in sports, he's given basically nothing in return. How much longer does he need? Or, better question - how many more excuses are you gonna make for him?

I get Michigan fan's perspective here. He is like Glen Mason was at Minnesota. Glen never got us to that next level, but he got us to the point that coaches outside of Minny could look at Minny and see that they COULD get us to the next level, hence our getting a guy like PJFleck into the program. Mason also convinced the fanbase we could compete with the upper echelon as well, so the fanbase helped raise or donated the money to build the new stadium and then the new Practice Facilities.

So you are right, he's been a failure in many ways, but he's done enough to get Michigan back to a point that they do not need to be rebuilt, they just need a new coach to come in and take them to the next level.

And they are Michigan FANS, the term fan comes from the root "fanatic", so of course they are going to be defensive and will defend their coach, especially if the criticism comes from a hated Ohio St fan.

Depending on who comes and goes, next season looks to be a rebuilding year, relatively speaking. The defense will probably take a step back and the offense will probably be similar to this year. I think they have good WR's, but when you have a Harbaugh calling the plays it doesn't matter.

Defense has gotten trashed the last two games. Defense really is the only thing that has looked passable in his entire tenure at Michigan and he has no part in that.

Agreed. It'll be interesting next season just looking at the schedule. They get MSU, ND and OSU at home. Michigan plays good at home, at least this year. Have road games at Wisconsin and PSU. If they don't take care of things at home, they could be looking at a 4/5 loss season.

Michigan got the ranked road game monkey off their back, albeit against #24ish Michigan State. The schedule looks in their favor, they lost McElwein (who knows if that is a positive or not), I don’t see them making yet another offensive coordinator change again for next year, defense will take a massive hit through the draft this year, the OLine looked much better under it’s first year of Warinner but still needs to improve. Lots of moving pieces but I think it will be a step back overall for the program with the defense.

But Glen Mason was never close to being the highest paid HC in the game, and he also never brought the dog and pony show that Harbaugh has brought with him. It's been an embarrassment. We all heard nothing but rhetoric about how michigan is going to take over the conference and how they were going to return to national prominence, but they've been a pretty massive failure overall.

Also, the expectations at michigan are a lot higher than at Minnesota. While michigan has been better than Minnesota under Harbaugh, they've accomplished about the same amount from a national perspective.

I would agree it looks in their favor, only if you think they win those home games, which I'm not so sure. Hell I think even Army might give them a game. But you're right alot of moving parts for next season.

It will be funny if they struggle to hear the "we're young" excuse. They lose a ton on the D-Line. Winovich, Gary, Mone, Lawrence, and Soloman transferred.

Michigan didn’t hire Harbaugh to be a stepping stone coach. They hired him to be the next Schembechler (yes I know they didn’t win any natty’s under Bo but that doesn’t matter to them). He was supposed to be the man for the next 20 years and paid him as such and paid his staff as such.

Like you said, they are a better home team, than a road team against teams not named Ohio State or Michigan State. They are undefeated at home against anyone not OSU or MSU in his tenure. The games against at home were close against MSU and much closer against OSU than on the road.

I imagine, unless something drastic happens on our offense, Michigan wins against MSU next year.

Nice rational post.

Too rare these days...
