All things Seattle:

Two things however irked me:

- Vegas will be exempt from participating. Why? Seattle's Opening Night is 3 years away (2021-22), which will have been Vegas' 5th year in the league. If it was one, or even two (like in 1998 with Nashville and then 2000 with the BJs and Minnesota) I could understand but 5 years is BS. Vegas continues to get favorable terms no matter what.

- Names: Seattle Sockeyes sounds like a spoof team in a hockey movie, and Totem and Metropolitans are both lame too. My choice would be the Rainiers with the Kraken a close second.

Kraken is not lore, my friends.

=)~~

I think Vegas doesn’t get any money if they don’t give up a player. So the other 30 teams each get more. Vegas going to the final cost Seattle an extra 150 mil. Proof that winning and profit would come fast and easy

To answer the vegas vegas question.

One simple thing. I'll let connor explain.

Remember who’s running the Metropolitans (my choice for the first US based team to win the Cup in 1917) Liweeklys, both of them.
I don’t see this ending well.

Question:
Seeing as they pushed Seattle expansion back a year to 2021, I assume most of the current youngsters in the Kings system will have 2+ years of professional experience by then. And thus as with the Vegas draft, they will not be exempt.

But what about guys like Anderson-Dolan (junior this year) and Kupari (professional but in Europe)???. Let's say both those guys play on the Kings in 2019-20 and 2020-2021 seasons. That will be 2 years of actual NHL, and should be Expansion Exempt.

But is either of them accuring a year of "professional" this season? (Which would of course = 3 years by the time 2021 Expansion Draft occurs).

One year of "Professional Experience" is essentially defined as any season a player plays 10+ games. Dude could literally be on the roster all 82 games but only play in 9 and it would not count as a season and therefore not burn a year off his contract, affect Waivers eligibility/exemption, etc.

I'm very high level here because there are nuances and other verbiage but a professional season is any league except Juniors.

You have the Entry Level Slide, all kinds of stuff involved but that's the basics.

Is that 10 games NHL? or do 10 AHL games count as 1 yr of professional experience?

If it's AHL or NHL, then I wonder if the Kings might think twice about Vilardi playing up with Kings after World Juniors is over. Or for a guy like Mikey Anderson, if he wants to turn pro after this college season is over. Maybe he is a guy who comes out but they limit him to 9 games.

10 games in any professional league (AHL, Europe, NHL, etc.). Because of the agreement with the AHL/CHL, the CHL (or Juniors as we know it. These are the OHL, QMJHL and WHL) the CHL is not considered a professional league which is why that caveat of "except Juniors" exists.*

After the Trade Deadline, all NHL teams are allowed 4 call ups - they can be from any league associated with the parent club and Emergency Recalls do not count against the 4 recall limit.

After the Trade Deadline as well:
- An NHL team has no roster limits (23 before the Trade Deadline). You'll see playoff bound teams bring up a bunch of players to experience it and learn how to be a pro (Muzzin for example in 2012)
- Trades are not permitted except for non PO teams
- Waivers rules still apply

Teams will do a few things after the Trade Deadline - they will make paper transactions, or "papered down" as they call it. To be eligible for the Calder Cup playoffs, an NHL contracted player must be on the active AHL roster by 3pm EST on Trade Deadline day. This permits them to join the AHL team whenever their season is over. The other two are giving someone a look and lastly final decisions on players for next season as the season winds down.

Regarding Vilardi, at any time this season he can be returned to the CHL if the Kings feel that is where he needs to be. However, he will not be eligible for the AHL because those rules are essentially 4 years of major Junior Hockey or 20 years old, whichever comes first. Next season if he is not on the NHL team, he will be eligible fir the AHL since his birthday is before 12/31 of the current season (8/22) and he will be 20.

Vilardi is going to be playing somewhere regularly soon, whether it be LA, the Frontenacs (his CHL team) or the Canadian Team for World Juniors. He is on a conditioning assignment in the ECHL right now (a professional league) but since it's a conditioning assignment it will not count towards the 10 game limit (conditioning assignments are limited to 14 days so NHL teams can't hide/stash talent) and he should be back in LA soon. It'll be interesting to see how the Kings blend him in and what eventually happens.

Regarding Anderson, that is exactly what LA did with Rob Blake in spring 1990, when he left Bowling Green and played 4 games with LA. With NCAA players, as soon as they sign a contract, they are not eligible for college hockey again.

Back then it was different under that CBA but the premise was the same - see what you have and not burn a year if you don't want to or if the prospect needs more work at a lower level.

* look into the whole debate about why CHL players are ineligible to play in the AHL if they don't crack the NHL roster. There is some serious reading in there and great points from all parties and POVs.

To clarify:
  • Anderson-Dolan finishes Junior this year, plays less than 10 games with AHL/NHL combo. In this scenario, come June, 2021, he is within the 2-year pro experience category, and thus exempt from Expansion Draft.
  • Mikey Anderson: same as Anderson-Dolan scenario. Should be exempt in 2021.
  • Kupari: already playing pro in Europe, so definitely eligible for Expansion in 2021 with 2+ years of Pro experience. Would need to be protected if deemed worthy by then.
  • Vilardi: If healthy (big "if"), then he likely joins Kings after World Juniors, and thus would have 2+ years of pro experience in 2021. At this point, they might deem it more important for Vilardi to play the remaining 40 games with Kings and get real NHL experience. HOWEVER: given the Kings are terrible this year, and already halfway through the season by the time World Juniors is finished, I still think its worth a discussion for the Kings to send him back to his junior club (for the sole purpose of having him be exempt in 2021)???
  • Clague, Brickley, Peterson, Wagner, Rempal, etc: already with AHL or NHL clubs, and thus eligible for Expansion in 2021.

On that note: I think McPhee laughed at the majority of NMC for the 2017 Vegas Expansion Draft. Teams were forced to use "protection" selections on aging veterans that Vegas wasn't the least bit interested in anyways. Ottawa protecting Phaneuf? Ducks protecting Bieska? I'm sure there were more.
