How many pitchers in the past 25 years with a substantial amount of innings (say, 2,000+) have had a career ERA as low as Halladay's 3.38. Try to make the list and you'll see why you're wrong...
So since he is the best of a mediocre lot as far as ERA, he gets in? To me they have been watering down the HoF recently. I'm fine if no one gets elected in a particular year. Its unfair to the real HoFers from the past. We still talk about Walter Johnson, Cy Young, Sandy Koufax, Bob Feller, Carl Hubbell and Bob Gibson etc to this day but no one will be talking about Roy Halladay as one of the greats in the coming generations.

Bob Feller has a 3.25 ERA and you believe he's an all-time great. Roy Halladay has a 3.38 ERA and you believe that's mediocre.

So the difference between being an all-time great and being mediocre is a whopping 0.13 in ERA? Makes perfect sense...

Good point. Perhaps Feller's legend has got more into my thinking than his actual stats. I think the key though is all baseball fans still know Feller's name 60+ years after he pitched his last game but I'm pretty sure the same won't be said of Halladay. Even 5 years after retirement I don't think much about him, and I think only knowledgeable baseball fans remember him much. Had a fine career though.

When Halliday was active, there was no doubt in my mind that we were watching a future HOFer. That is actually one of my key criteria when I do my ballot. Numbers are SUPER important. But they don’t tell 100% of the story. That said, I think Doc has the numbers to get in anyway.

a lot of that is due to lack of playoffs... Which is not really his fault... since he was pretty good in the playoffs when he was there...

But people will remember him... He is the only player to throw a no hitter in playoff play AND regular season... Plus he is also on the Perfect game list...

Multiple CYA don’t hurt his case either.

I agree that baeball fans will remember him but I think they'll remember him more like "Oh yeah, that guy was pretty good, wasn't he" when they get reminded about him. He won't be a household name like Feller. I suppose some of that has to do with baseball being the national pastime during Feller's career and the seriously declining interest in it during Halladay's.

You don't think much of that is because he played in Toronto?

I mean, the guy won 2 Cys and finished runner up 2 more times.....worse pitchers might be remembered more, but it's not due to performance since not many have performed better than he has.

True. But that's another point for what I'm talking about. I didn't even remember that until I just looked up his career stats.
When I think of best Phillies pitchers I think of Bunning and Carlton not Halladay and when I think of best Blue Jay pitchers I think of Clemens, Cone, Wells and even Morris before I think of Halladay which I admit is wrong.

yea, you cant fault him for that though... Most people don't even remember what they have for lunch that day... But he has done enough to be a first balloter...

I mean, how many people have had a perfect game??

How many people had a no hitter in the playoffs??

How many people have had both?? ONLY Halladay

He also has 2 CY

and a tragic death story(sad, but true)

Very well could be part of it. I was saying in another post it was hard to think of good Blue Jays pitchers and I thought more about Morris, Clemens, Cone and Wells before Halladay which is wrong because he was better. Not sure what it was about Halladay.

Multiple CYA is not an automatic ticket to Cooperstown (Lincecum, Santana), but it does automatically put you into the discussion. When you look at all the bolded numbers on his BBRef page and factor in his post season success, I don’t think there is much question that he is a HOFer.

I think part of the allure of the older guys is that starting pitching was so much more important back then than it is today. Its about the bullpen these days, but in those days it was all about the starting rotation.

Part of the allure is also the misconception that the past is better than the current... Once you become a legend people forget how Human you were...

I'm mostly looking forward to hearing from the indeterminate pompous BBWAA jackass who announces he left Halladay off his ballot because he won't vote for someone who died flying a plane under the influence.

Which is nuts especially when talking about guys from pre-1950. The level of competition is so much tougher today.
