Is it just me,but it seems like Hak can't get these guys to play a full 60 minute game most nights?I still think Hextall fucked up on this choice. And speaking of Hexy,he should have given up 5 1st rounders,if that's what it took to get Hellebuyck when he was available.

I don't give a shit if it's the trade route,but get a god damn proven goalie,that can handle a 60 game workload-see Bobrovsky-he's a UFA next year.

Sorry guys, but I'm 59 and "next year"is a fucking old tune that's only good if Halle Berry sings it nude!

Our team still needs to learn how to play defense here as a whole. Despite the win, giving up four goals to a 19 year old rookie and 20 year old nobody should be a little embarrassing for our crew that has a lot of either Nhl or Ahl experience.

That was a pretty solid game statistically, at least at even strength. You're going to lose most games in which you give up three power play goals though. The penalty kill cannot continue to suck that much.

Good to get some guys going offensively. Guys like Laughton and Raffl are really good depth players for us that will now be relied on even more with these recent injuries.

But getting back to the topic at hand, when your goalies have looked above average (or at least average) yet both sport a 4.00 gaa and .886 sv% or worse, the defense is not getting the job done at all.

We need to get word on Nolan Patrick here. I hope he returns in short order, but when a guy is a team-worst -5 with zero points, maybe a short break to wake himself the fuck up may do him some good. Tough love, youngster...Lol

That said, when healthy, I would promote him to Couturier's spot on the top power play unit, then feed him often to boost his confidence. He fucking needs this right now. Coots does not, he is probably our best overall player, plus he gets used heavily in all situations.

Then is some fine photo shopping skills you have there. Now if you could just do something with the JVR contract to make it void after this year, you would be a hero.

A bit of Photoshop I can do......

But I'm not to good at making miracles.....

Meh he's probably only 1 injury away from voiding that contract anyways.

I'm still struggling with why bring him back.

I don't understand how they felt he's a better fit for the team the second time here.
Did they need a new towel boy

IDK either, I guess one good season translates to a big contract. With that money Hexy could have landed a bigger fish IMO.

What does it take to really spark this team? Granite we are winning but we are playing a bad Sens team and barley winning! Pickard has been as solid as he can be not a real pretty game , we did look better in the 2nd though.
I thought the same thing. We are winning but winning ugly. Pickard was better than i thought

Some stats the stood out:

Jake 2 goals 3 assists plus 3- Jake was a monster last night
Gudas 3 assists plus 2
Weisse 2 assists plus 2 in only 11 minutes of ice
Lehtera 8 PMs Used his size and stuck up for his teammates. Please continue this type of hockey you will be a fan favorite

All the players that seem to always be on the bubble have started out strong this season.

JvR with the Leafs
17-18: 36 goals (would have been 1st on the Flyers) / 54 points (5th)
16-17: 29 goals (2nd) / 62 points (1st)
15-16*: 29 goals (2nd) / 60 points (T2nd)
14-15: 27 goals (2nd) / 56 points (3rd)
13-14: 30 goals (1st) / 61 points (3rd)
12-13**: 18 goals (2nd) / 32 points (T3rd)

*only played half the season, extrapolated his production
** lockout season

Hate him all you like, but..

#1 - Please don't bring that "one year" nonsense to the argument. If JvR had been on the Flyers over the past 6 years, statistically he would've been the Flyers 2nd best offensive player. Consistently. And he would have finished no worse than 2nd in goals in any of those 6 years.

#2 - He missed 45 games total out of the 458 possible regular season games played in Toronto. 42 of which came in 15-16 where he broke his foot. So the 'soft' or 'injury prone' nonsense can be left at home too. Aside from a broken foot, he missed 3 games over 6 years. Our beloved beacon of toughness, Wayne Simmonds, missed 47 games over the same time frame.

#3 - He was the 2nd best player in free agency this year. The stats make that a fact. If Tavares didn't want to come here, which he didn't, Hextall literally could not have possibly done better.

I get not liking his game. He plays too much on the perimeter, doesn't hit anybody, so on and so forth. But the guy puts up points and is a GOOD hockey player. The hate he gets on here is ridiculous IMO. You're literally hating the 2nd or 3rd best offensive player on the team because he doesn't throw enough hits. That's insane. I like good physical hockey and big hits as much as the next guy. But goals win games, not hits. I'll take a goal over a hit every single game of the schedule.

3rd line winger with a big contract and a loooong contract that doesn't do anything else but put up 60 points is not the player that will be putting us over the top. That is a wasted contract especially the years. We didn't need offense. We need size defense goalie and PK he doesn't check any of those boxes.

Using this one to comment on a couple posts because the multi-quote thing doesn't work for me anymore.

1. Agree, looked like an ugly one last night. But an ugly win is better than a pretty loss! Hopefully it helps them right the ship.

2. Raffl and Laughton look great this year. I would say they're the only two that look great to this point, but they definitely look good.

3. Great to see Jake have a big game. Gudas too. Weise was impressive honestly. I did not expect that. Keep it up guy. I like Lehtera standing up for his teammates, but of those 8 PIMs, the Sens scored 2 goals while the Flyers were shorthanded because of Lehtera. So I'm not planning a celebration for the guy. The PK sucks, and it doesn't look like it's going to get better, so stop taking penalties.

That doesn't make him a bad player. I agree, Hextall probably could've spent money elsewhere that would have helped more. But JvR was the 2nd best player available (that didn't return to his old team).

Actually I might take this back. Looking at the signings in free agency this year, I would've preferred JvR and his offense that wasn't really the weakness, to most of the contracts out there.

Colin Miller 4x3.875, no thanks.
TvR 2x2.3, no.
de Haan 4x4.55, maybe, but that's a lot for an injury prone guy
Manning 2x2.25, lol no.
Statsny 3x6.5, C which would have been more ideal, but also doesn't PK
Filpula 1x2.75, lol no.
Beagle 4x3, big LOL no. you don't give a PK specialist 3M and you DEFINTELY don't give him 4 years.
Roussel 4x3, see Beagle
Komarov 4x3, see Roussel
Grabner 3x3.35, I would've been fine with this, but they could've afforded him and JvR

In net, there's literally nobody on the list that I would consider an upgrade over Elliot that was a free agent. And it takes two to tango as they say, in the trade market. Plus you have to give up assets other than cap space.

So you can say Hextall didn't do enough. I might even agree with you there. But JvR wasn't a bad signing. It didn't preclude Hextall from doing more, he just didn't.

You did a lot of work here so i owe you a response. We have to agree to disagree here. I never liked him as a player as he is and always will be a one trick pony and i certainly dont like the contract of 5 years we gave him.
