They're trying to keep the starting QBs healthy. Nobody wants to watch a Glennon/Dobbs Monday night game.
This the main reason.
Look at the crapfest the 49ers are working out now.

You guys don't know what you're looking at. He easily could have not landed on Kirk, but he makes sure he does. Could have easily finished over him or even off to the side. But he tried to put his weight center mass. Clear as day.

It's happening in a flash though bro, in slow mo you might think he could a easily rolled to the side, but in real time it's different, he's desperately trying to get to the QB and make a play, it wasn't malicious in anyway.... Back in the day people would be throwing there TV"s out of windows seeing that called, the game is just getting so soft....

This new rule where a defender can't tackle a Qb in the back field is terrible. Clay Matthews and Tyrone Crawford made good tackles. That was not roughing

He rolled and tried to put his weight on his own arm. You are crazy if you think he could do more in an instant.

eaglesnut has his own kinds of physics laws (and laws of human reaction time and physiology), it seems

Have you ever played football?
He stopped as much as he could. He grabbed the QB with his arm. He didn't even lift the QB's feet off the ground,

eaglesnut expects defenders to break their own arms and rip apart their own knees in order to adhere to these idiotic new rules.

Then either start a farm league, get decent quality of GM's, or have a serious talk with the NCAA about the absolute dogpile of ***** QB's that come out of college.

I'm all for protecting the QB

Almost every team in the league sees their season end when they lose their QB

But they have gone too far with the "body weight" rule. It's the most glaring example of the league changing how these players have played football all their lives

It was mentioned last night, you can't coach these guys to comply with the rule, these players don't know how play by these rules

Just a mess

Come on now don't get logical here.....They would rather put the onus on the Refs judgement who are probably the lowest form of scum outside of Goodell.

There are only two things they shouldn't be able to do to the QB.

(1) They can't pick the QB up and try to break his back over their knee.

(2) They can't pick the QB up by his ankles and bash his head into the ground more than once.

Blatantly late hit after the ball is released.

Blatant excessive force (picking up a defenseless QB like a rag doll and slamming him to the turf with all of your force... etc...)

Crown of the helmet to the head/neck area.

I can do away with the "below the knee" shit too...

Yeah, but it's not back in the day. They actually made the rule easier. It sucks, but it's still easier to call. And that's an improvement. We already knew they were removing some of that great violence this game gives us. But it's gone.

most of these tackles on the QB isnt about violence.
It is good form tackling. The NFL is literally saying dont use good form when tackling a QB. Which on its own creates injuries.

Well I don't think an off balance defender would be called for landing on a QB awkwardly, but if you have a clean shot at him and finish by driving him straight downward with you on top, that'll be called. These guys need to be rolling off at the end at a minimum.

It's simple now. If he lands on the QB, it's a flag.

This rule already effects the Eagles greatly, since they have the best Dline.

We all like the violence. We all like hurting opponents QBs. But that's not legal defense anymore.

Game last night was a good inidicator. Steelers were not afraid to test the rule, they got like 3 of those penalties called. In the end they did slow down Fitzpatrick enough to win. Had they been less aggressive, he would have had less mistakes and probably the win.

You think a defender can do more than Mathews did? He got his helmet out of the tackle. He tackled mostly with his arm. He didn't lift the QB off the ground. He tried to avoid putting his weight on the QB. All this in a matter of less than a second. He still got flagged.
Try running full speed at someone and tackle them without your body landing on them. It can't be done in most cases.

If they are going to continue with this nonsense, they need to do 2 things:
- Review every roughing the passer flag. So the ref can see whether the defender tried to hurt the QB or if he was trying to roll to the side.

- They need to call "in the grasp" immediately when a QB gets grabbed.

Yeah, game has already been made so much safer though, I just think the NFL is going to far, you can't totally eliminate injuries in a contact sport, it's like the NFL thinks they can and it's getting pretty bad...
