How much extra $$$ is the Ecodeisel over the 5.7 Hemi? Seems to me you'll have to put a shit load of miles on that thing just to break even. The Hemi has serious balls, sounds great and with the variable displacement technology gets decent MPG if you lay off the gas pedal.

I'm an inch away from buying an SUV and I've pretty much decided I'll get a 3 to 4 year old Tahoe. No fucking way I'm spending 60K on a new one when I can get a low miles 14' or 15' for half of that. The Chevy 5.3 is the best small block V-8 on the market for power, and MPG IMO and a loaded Tahoe is real nice ride. I'll just keep my beat up old Ram 2500 for the heavy duty work and plowing and use the Tahoe to tow my work trailer around unless the job calls for something nasty.

It's about $6k more. Better mileage and just being better make it worth it, easily. Still, being a cheapass, I'll buy an unsold previous year model for less than an F150 work truck with the tiny Ecoboost.

The dealership still had 4 2017s left and one was an Ecodiesel in Gator blue with a saddle leather interior. So, Imma' get it tomorrow. We're haggling around $39k while the sticker is $54k. Still, I walked away today trying to get them to throw in one of those built in winch bumpers.

Like this but color matched to the truck.

The big 6 my buddy had was real low on torque relative to the HP. The 5.3 is plenty strong to tow or haul some shit, not that I would be loading the back of it with sheetrock.

The Tundra felt dead like that with nothing in the back. I can't figure how a V8 that big could be that lifeless...and with 18mpg on the freakin highway!

I couldn’t disagree with you more. I hauled a ton of ceramic tile on a 20 ft trailer with my Tundra and that thing didn’t miss a beat. You could barely tell it was pulling that trailer at all.

Maybe it was geared low or something. The thing was really sluggish compared to the F150 and Ram. I have several friends who swear by that truck with the big V8. I'm trying to get it...but just don't.

Compared to that eco boost it’s definitely going to seem sluggish. When those turbos kick in it’s amazing how quick it’s pushes your head back. I’d have to check the specs but I do believe the Tundras 5.7L engine produce quite a bit more torque. My biggest complaint is the fact that they’re lagging big time on the gas mileage front by comparison.

I went in and changed my mind. The 2019 is so much nicer. I think I'll just lease a new one again.

I wonder why when the 3.5 makes more torque, gets better mileage, etc? I test drove all those and it felt strong as hell. Apparently, they have problems, eh?

The problems were mostly first generation versions of the ecoboost - intake valve coking, the charge air cooler building up with condensation and timing chain issues. For the most part, they've been dealt with. When you sell hundreds of thousands of vehicles with a completely new engine, it's almost common sense to predict problems to occur.

More than likely, my next truck will be powered by an ecoboost.

How about a diesel Ecoboost?

I've torn down a few old diesel engines and this one looks like a toy. It has a timing belt in the oil sump? You never know, this could turn out to be a 500k + mile engine...but it certainly doesn't look like it.

I'd take it....if it was given to me. I'm just not a fan of diesels, no matter whose badge is on it.

I’d wait about 7 years to see what the initial performance on them is.

Have an ecoboost myself. Love the motor. It's a 2014 f-150 and no problems with it other than keeping my foot out of it. Got a nice tune setup, usually keep it stock but once played with the 93 octane tow/performance setup and holy hell.

I have a 30' camper I tow with it, and while the gas mileage isn't great by any means (8-10 MPG), it pulls and passes like it's not there. Love the back seat size on the thing too.

Just never cared for the look of the Fords. But with MPG and safety restrictions all trucks look too low to the ground for me, and all are huge hulks (granted I don't want a canyon because I want to tow). lol

Of course in a few years might look at one of those f150 deisels. Still strong enough to pull, but 30 highway MPG. Never had a deisel before, but would be tempting.
