Say I'm in South Bend and want to get back to Philly the same day. I can do it. I can even swing up to Michigan for some weed on the way.

Not true. First of all, it's not how pit stops were figured into the results. Few would drive 14 hours straight on a cross-country road trip. On my recent road trips, my drives covered 500-600 miles/day between 9 AM - 9 PM, or 600/12=50 mpg average, with several 30-60 minute pit stops. So their figures are excellent and development continues.
Another thing is you can't even stop anywhere that doesn't have a hookup.

You lose your driving time just getting there.

it's just interesting that you are basing this whole premise on a single drive you make maybe once a year.

who cares about the savings for driving around town or whatever...it all comes down to driving to St Louis

So I'd be forced to quit in Chester Co. Still, not bad for an EV w/o a charging station. That's what this particular discussion is about anyway. It simply demonstrates the progress they are making.
