Fifth, not fourteenth.

If an exec's competence is measured on a comparison of his team's proximity to a championship and what they had to spend to get there, I'm pretty pumped about having Chris Antonetti in the Indians' front office. They gave the Cubs all they could handle while being outspent by 63% - and that's with 10% of the Indians' payroll on the disabled list.

false.

That's a very compelling and well supported argument you've made.

Just kidding.

Well considering I found a link that shows them at 14 and someone else posted a link that showed them at 15....

Chicago "bottoms out"..Theo goes full tilt Lucchinno and talks the Board into spending the dough.....gets some core, but expensive players and wins!

Who are the "core" expensive players?

I sure hope you're not talking about Jason Hayward...

I can see Jon Lester at 20Mil Per year but everyone else wasn't very expensive and definitely not "core."

28 total players, $100,759,500 total salary, $3,598,554 avg salary

Padres don't stand a chance...Baseball prospectus is how much they actually spent....not what they budgeted on April 1

Not sure what links you're referring to, but I'm assuming this is one of them:

It's to a site called SteveTheUmp.com and has a Cubs opening day payroll of $117MM and in 14th.

The link I provided is from sportrac.com, which tracks payrolls in real time, so it will have in-season payroll changes such as the addition of Chapman - you know, the team that actually played in the World Series. It has the Cubs currently sitting at $186MM.

Additionally, Baseball Prospectus has the Cubs opening day payroll at $172MM, which makes a lot more sense given sportrac's current figure.

Given my choice, I'm going with the reputable baseball sites over Steve The Ump.

Cowboy is right. Theo >> Cashman

For a team that is always in the top 2 of money spent and has had no front office upheavals or even managerial changes for 8 years, to have missed the playoffs 3 out of the past 4 years is pretty damning.
