Not sure what links you're referring to, but I'm assuming this is one of them:

It's to a site called SteveTheUmp.com and has a Cubs opening day payroll of $117MM and in 14th.

The link I provided is from sportrac.com, which tracks payrolls in real time, so it will have in-season payroll changes such as the addition of Chapman - you know, the team that actually played in the World Series. It has the Cubs currently sitting at $186MM.

Additionally, Baseball Prospectus has the Cubs opening day payroll at $172MM, which makes a lot more sense given sportrac's current figure.

Given my choice, I'm going with the reputable baseball sites over Steve The Ump.

Yeah - shame on me for relying on ESPN..

At any rate. My original premise stands true.

My entire counterpoint on this thread has been that it seems to me the Yankees may have changed strategies based on reigning in their free agency spending over the last three years and have focused on acquiring prospects.

Now you're implying that I meant that the Yankees don't currently have a high payroll?

I owe you an apology. Clearly, you're not ESL. You're fucking retarded.

They're reigning it in for now so that Tex, Sabathia etc. can expire.

They're gonna sign at least one of Harper and machado.

Cashman has been GM for 5 World series teams and Epstein for only 2.

Cashman 4
1998
1999
2000
2009

Epstein 3 (2 different teams)
2004
2007
2016

Theo deserves some credit for 2013 as well. Most of the Sox top contributors (Pedroia, Ellsbury, Ortiz, Lester, Lackey, Buchholz, Salty, Nava) were Epstein guys. Cherington did a good job with the final touches though.

Cashman still has the edge.
yes, but it's a lot closer than 5-2 and he's also been a GM roughly 5 years longer.

Cashman's a damn good GM. Doesn't get nearly as much props as he should. He's done a very good job in trades.

Cashman was gifted with a world series winning line up already functionally in place that reeled off 3 in a row. After that? He got one in 2009 after doling out half a billion in contracts in the off season beforehand.

This really isn't even close. Theo took two perennial losers and got both over the hump. The Cubs look like they're going to be a threat for years to come.

The fact is Cashman has more World Series wins. If Epstein ties him then you may have a point.

To be fair though, you could also say Theo inherited a damn good team when he took over. The Red Sox were a 93 win team in 2002 (though going by pythag, they played like a 100 win team). Theo did add some finishing touches though, bringing in Millar, Mueller, Ortiz, Bellhorn, Arroyo, Foulke and Schilling.

Right and I think that before this Cubs WS, the Theo vs. Cashman argument was close and slightly in Cashman's favor. But the Cubs were a tire fire when he took over. The Arrieta and Strop trade for Clevinger and Feldman didn't looks so lopsided when it was done now looks like highway robbery.

On the other hand you have Cashman having to pay aging stars to go away because he stupidly gave them 10 year deals.

Cashman still has the edge.

Cashman wasn't given for reins until 2005. Georgie made home more of a figurehead than a GM.

Even if we give credit or Cashman for the titles before he was given full control it was at a different time. Things have changed the team's can fill their rosters. Cashman is making clear he has to change something to get back to his glory days.

Theo took a team, tore it to the ground and turned them into World Series champions all while Cashman was making 200 million dollar failures.

Those guys aren't just touches they were core players critical to the Red Sox success.

The strangest bit to me about this whole thing is the fact that an alleged Cardinals fan decided he needed to start a thread unabashedly fellating the Cubs' top exec.
He also ran the team that killed the Cardinals and built the team that beat them in 2013. That shouldn't matter and doesn't matter. What he has done is remarkable and only an idiot wouldn't recognize that. I'm not saying you don't .
