We don’t know for sure what the selection committee may have been thinking when they nominated Smith. However, the most logical explanation seems to be a pretty classic case of identity confusion, where the Giants’ Steve Smith was forgotten while the accolades of the Panthers’ Steve Smith, with his name right there on the ballot, caused the nominators to forget about that pesky five-year rule.

New York Giants News, 9/13: Did HOF Nominate Ex-Giant Steve Smith By Mistake?

The inclusion of former New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith on the list of 108 nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2018 has set off a torrent of debate. Did the Hall of Fame actually nominate the wrong Steve Smith? Did they think they were nominating the recently-retired Steve Smith Sr., who is is worthy but not yet eligible?

This photo of nominees might lead you to believe that is the case.

its not just deadspin...

and i think youre misunderstanding.

I understand perfectly well.

Steve Smith (former NYG) is a first-time eligible in the Modern-Era list of players. Quoting the HoF eligibility rules;

"Therefore, any individual who last played or coached in 2012 are eligible for the first time in 2018)."

This Steve Smith won't sniff the final 25 unless the silly East Coast media deems it so.

The next Steve Smith to be eligible will.

If you can only tell me where that picture came from beyond the New York Giants website and Pinterest... because it sure as hell didn't come from the OFFICIAL Pro Football Hall Of Fame website...

we all know the nfl doesnt admit to its mistakes, ever.

Wrong Steve Smith nominated to Pro Football HOF

That means the player who was nominated was… the other Steve Smith. The Steve Smith who retired after playing six seasons in the NFL with the Giants, Eagles and Rams. The Steve Smith who had modest career totals of 2,641 yards and 12 touchdowns. That Steve Smith.

He did have a Pro Bowl appearance in 2009 and Super Bowl ring from 2008 to show for his efforts, but those credentials aren’t nearly enough for him to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio.

Nearly every other wide receiver nominee—there were 12 besides Smith—surpassed those marks in a two-year stretch over their careers. Even the “ice up, son” Steve Smith matched the other Smith’s 12 career touchdowns in just a single season back in 2005.

So it’s easy to assume that there was a potential mix-up in the process. Nonetheless, the other Steve Smith could plausibly be the most underqualified nominee in Pro Football Hall of Fame history.

I don't care how you look at it, but the fact "A" Steve Smith has been nominated thus years is a joke.
One simply isn't eligible and the other doesn't even have the stats to be considered a HOF player.

Eighteen finalists will be presented to the full 48-member Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee during its annual selection meeting on "Selection Saturday," the day before Super Bowl LII. The finalists will consist of 15 Modern-Era finalists, the recently named Senior Finalists, Robert Brazile and Jerry Kramer, and the Contributor Finalist, Bobby Beathard.

The Selection Committee will meet on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018 in Minneapolis, Minn. to elect the Class of 2018. While there is no set number for any class of enshrinees, the selection process by-laws provide that between four and eight new members will be selected.[/U]
