Maybe the extra teams in the East is is Bettmans way to make up for the tougher travel schedule in the West?

I really like the divisional round in the playoffs. Some of these so called rivalries could use a kick in the ass.

The way the Atlantic is set up the Islanders won't be making the playoffs for at least another decade.

The West just got a lot easier though with Detroit moving away.

The league shouldn't expand until every team currently in the league is stable. Heck, I think there are too many teams in the league as it is.

The problem I see with Detroit in the East is that they lose rivalries with STL, CHI and even historical ones (eg. COL).

Chicago all alone as an original six out in the West seems wrong to me too.

On principle, I agree with you, however all the owners see are huge expansion fees and write-offs for losses.

Detroit finds players every year. Brunner is a 24 year old rookie & kicking butt. Tatar Tots is finally getting a chance & producing nicely. The East will be tougher. The West will be weaker.

Tavares isn't bad either. Next year will be different. I expect Niederreiter & Brock Nelson to make the team. I have high hopes for Strome as well, but he needs to add some muscle to his frame.

It's annoying how Detroit just finds guys almost every year. They're beat up right now & still finding ways to win.

All I'm saying is that (in my opinion) the jury is still out as far as Brunner is concerned. He's off to a great start, but it's hard to gauge things in this shortened season. If he's still producing at close to the same rate this time next season, I'll gladly eat some crow.

Brunner's skating ability & hands give me reason to believe he's going to be a solid NHL player at the very least. We shall see.

11 Minnesota
12 Edmonton
13 Calgary
14 Colorado

Only Columbus is worse in the West.

Not completely. The west, which is the far superior conference, loses a top, consistent team and a bottom feeder on the way up. Blue Jackets look better in the East (especially the South East). And Detroit immediately rises to the top, which is why they whined until they got to go..

The problem with the stated proposal is the top 3 in each division get in. By default, you get teams in that are not as good as some teams that are kept out. We have that problem now, where the third seed from the SouthEast (lets be honest, it's always them) is worse than 2 or 3 of the next seeds.


If the guy in Detroit wasn't such a whiner, this would be so easy. One team, that was in the east moved west. So take one team, next closest to east Geographically, and put them in the East to compensate. Done, in time for dinner.
