Which is really no different than the second team to posess knows they need to score a TD to stay in the game if the first team scored a FG or a TD, and then turn around and prevent another score if they tie again...
The rule is fine as it was. At least the way it was, it required that you win the coin toss to have the best chance of winning. Now you want to win the coin toss to defer the ball.

1) If you are second, you know exactly what you need on your drive to tie or win because you are guaranteed a chance.
2) First team doesn't necessarily have the luxury of going for it on 4th down and risking poor field position or a turn over. They will have to play field position if they are not moving the ball well. Second team has 4 downs every series to get the first down if they have to score.
3) Receiving team on initial kickoff is having to start probably from their 25. The secondary team possibly receiving the punt will get better field position typically. In that scenario, it is like the original rules were though, so didn't make a difference.

Even with the rule change it doesn't affect the game really other than making the coin toss winner want to defer to second position and make overtime longer. Just saying now they changed the rule to incentivize deferring the kickoff so they have second chance to tie or top first team possession.

To win the coin toss is chance.
To defer or keep is a choice..

1) If you are first, You need to put points on the board. If you have no faith in the defense, you need 7. Or 8.
2) If the first team scores, the second team has no luxury either. They HAVE to score at least as many to keep it alive.
3) I would rather see my team or any other team lose on a punt, or by not making it on 4th down than to never get the ball.

Agreed.
