How you going to get a team interested in an aging pitcher with a 4.96 ERA and who is still owed $56mil for 2018-19, plus the remainder of this years salary. Getting close to untradeable.

Rumor has it the Cubs have contacted Detroit about Verlander.

An interesting look inside JV's numbers this year: He has an ERA of 11.30 against Cleveland. His ERA in the other 14 starts is 3.87. Seems to me, he'd be quite useful for a contending team in the NL -- where he doesn't have to face the Indians!

True...I think he'd have some value as a veteran starter for a contending team. Problem is, the contending team that trades for him also gets his contracts for 2018 and 2019.
Just my opinion, but maybe it would be better to wait until the off season to move Verlander. Teams will have a better idea of the kind of money they can spend....and (hopefully) Verlander finishes the year on a positive note*. (And Detroit just might be working with a different GM at that point!)

*I know....if he stinks the rest of the season, Detroit is stuck with him for at least another year.

I heard the Cubs we're looking for a package deal with Verlander and Avila....

This team may not be talented, but they seem to just play like fucking idiots as well. Norris doesn't even look like he belongs in the MLB, just spaced out thinking he will get all the calls. This team is not coached properly.

I am not particularly impressed with Rich Dubee, for sure.

That said, the home plate ump last night looked like he'd never seen a curve ball. A couple that Norris threw caught plenty of plate and were called balls. Norris does, however, have to get over it and make the next pitch.

Let's be realistic -- There is as much of a chance that the Tigers will unload Verlander WITH his entire contract as there is of me stealing Kate Upton away from JV. I think a likely scenario is the Tigers eat maybe $10 million a year, which still clears $18 million in salary for each of the next two years. I believe an NL team will look at what Verlander has done overall, the fact that his fastball still has pop, his curve and slider still have bite, and not pay too much attention to what he's done in three months this season. JV's problems this season are almost entirely related to command and location, as shown in his walk rate (currently the highest of his career). If the stuff is still good, location is correctible.

Verlander at $18mil a year? Perhaps on an off season deal. Not expecting a lot in return. Could happen.
As for a deadline trade....if I am a GM of a contending team...I see several starting pitchers, I'd rather have than Verlander, who would come much cheaper and are pitching better NOW.

I went on vacation for a little over a week, did I miss anything with the Tigers?

Looks like no trades and still not a good team, VMart is back and Sanchez can be serviceable.

This team is a fucking disgrace to baseball. People need to be fired during the AS break.

I wonder if Ausmus is still manager after All Star break? If Brad goes, I'd like to see a few of the coaches the team stuck him with, go as well. Perhaps use some of the front office personnel to replace them - or pull some coaches up from their minor league system (find out if any of them have MLB ability for the future)

Some of my early choices for the Tigers' 2018 manager:
1. Bob Melvin....experience, Detroit connection. Experience working with building a team
2. Joey Cora...Pirate coach. Appeal for Latin players on club. Managed in minors
3. Gabe Kapler...works for Dodgers front office. Former Tiger. No real manager or coaching experience. Jewish....:heh:
4. Buck Showalter....I wish. Manager and then GM.
