January 15, 2014... The day the lights went out in Lane Stadium. The road back just got A LOT longer, and A LOT more difficult.

Think we can get TW 46? If so, could def be a net gain. There are other good options out there too. Or do u thing Stiney goes to OL and we start shufflin?

I think he will get the full court press and LOVVVES the Hokies and Virginia.

I liked what I saw from Grimes but lets not put a statue up yet, is all I am saying. 10 months is tough to evaluate. He isn't Gray, Wiles or Foster.

Who called?....the OL coach at Blacksburg High School? Shane needs to just stay off twitter.

Matt,

The dude was here for 10 months.

Relax.

Plus, all indications point to this being a net gain in the end.

Forgive if some of us don't trust these message board 'indications.' The fact is, the historically weakest portion of our football program has no coach and will now take a significant step backwards.

That's fine but crowning him a huge loss is a bit premature, no?

The OL was OK this year and we got a good class of under the radar guys on paper but the chicken little stuff I am seeing all over twitter would make you think TG left. Perspective is all I ask. If he left after 10 months that also says something about his long term prospectus here.

Posted this on a different thread and think it fits in pretty well here too.

Not impressed with Grimes. He was decent, which is 100x better than what VT had before him, but not someone I think has the potential to be an "elite" coach. Grimes is a good recruiter and an average coach.....which is a whole lot better than the mediocre recruiter/horrible coach before him.

My general stance is "meh" as long as VT is willing to go out and spend the money necessary to get a good coach.

So what you're saying is we were stuck with a shitty OL for so damn long we really don't know what a great one looks like.

Still, I hate to lose him so soon.

great points ... if he's leaving after 10 months, his long term outlook was that this was a couple year stop at most. the dude's leaving for (probably) DOUBLE the salary in an area as cheap as blacksburg. it's a no-brainer.

Yep. VT hasn't had what most programs would consider a "good" OL in a very long time. I think we have gotten lucky a few times and had "average" OLs, but not "good" ones. It is amazing that the VT football program has had as much success as it has over the last decade with the extreme garbage it has fielded at the most important unit on the field. Grimes got us on the right track, IMO, and I wanted him to stay a little while longer to continue us on that right track, but Grimes is not the "good" OL coach that VT needs. VT needs a TG, Foster, or even Wiles type coach at that spot if they want to continue with the offensive system they want to run.....and be successful at it.

Just a shot in the dark here with NO inside knowledge but what a out Shuman at FUMA?

But wouldn't that hurt our chances of the FUMA players qualifying?....oh, never mind. I think VT's best bets are T.Washington or get some BCS teams sloppy seconds the way we got Grimes last year. Where did the PSU OL coach under O'Brien end up? What about Vandy's O-line coach? Any OL coaches who recently got canned in the NFL? I don't even have names, but I'd imagine they are all better options than Shuman.

He was never going to be what the VT faithful is used to in terms of coaching stability.

Chicken little is definitely overkill. Frank hired well this last go around... Let him do it again. But this is a big loss nevertheless. Net gain is possible but I'd think unlikely. Grimes was not an average coach. He was a GREAT addition to our staff. Man can both recruit and coach at the top level. And he's the kind of guy that molds men, is loved by players and fans, etc. Guys like Grimes don't grow on trees.

I know y'all are pissed, and I would be too, but you can't blame the man for wanting to be closer to home. The farthest he ever got away from home before the VT job was Boise State, and you see how long he stayed there. Now, he can jump on a plane and be home in just about 1 hour.

I agree with alot of what you have said, but I agree with alot of what 46 said too. To think we can't get someone who is at least Grimes' equal is a bit premature. Let's see who CFB interviews and comes up with.

I have seen on various forums that Washington is a popular name right now. 8 seasons in the NFL as an OL, 2 Super Bowl rings (one as a coach one as a player), and has coached for 6 years as an OLC.
Todd Washington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have also seen on TKP, Chris Malone mentioned. Another former Hokie OL who is currently coaching at Virginia State, but has coached at JMU and VMI. Don't know much about him but his resume does not WOW me...
Chris Malone Biography - JMUSports.com—Official Web site of James Madison University Athletics

I know it is early, anyone else know any names being thrown out there??
