So does a team deserve 0 points for making it to the Super Bowl? That seems a bit ridiculous. I can see arguing the 5 points but to give them nothing is a lot more ridiculous in my opinion.

Perhaps putting a value on where you exit in the playoffs would work? Say, 1 point for losing in the WC round, 2 points for losing in the DIV round, etc. Or put value simply on playoff wins, then thevalue of a trip to the Super Bowl would take care of itself since you'd have to win at least 2 playoff games to get there.

I'm trying to, but I'm seriously struggling with his math.

In his OP with the first example of 19 winning seasons and 21 losing seasons he subtracts 21 from 19 and divides that by the number of seasons (50) and comes up with -4? 19-21 = -2. How do you divide that by 50 and come up with -4?

If someone can actually explain what the formula is, I'd be happy to put it on a google sheet and embed it for people to play with and add/modify.

Rather than just go by my opinion, I came up with a foolproof, scientific formula to rank all 32 NFL franchises. For those that care, here's the formula I used: I counted up each team's total number of winning seasons, subtracted their total number of losing seasons, and then divided that by their total number of seasons (so as not to unfairly punish teams that haven't been around as long), and used that to come up with their base score. Then added 1 point for each time they made the playoffs, 5 points for getting to the Super Bowl and losing, and 10 points for winning the Super Bowl. This is the team's final score, which I am naming after myself since I invented the formula. Each team's BS (Brian's Score) is then ranked to come up with the ultimate ranking!

So how many points for winning an NFL championship before it was named the Superbowl?

Actually I'm not ridiculously offended with Broncos at 4. I was expecting 3 but the Pats have certainly lived in the SB lately.

The Packers have the 3rd highest win percentage in the NFL and he has them 8th with his formula and that seems a bit off. Steelers funny enough are only 13th in NFL win percentage but ranked #1.

I think these types of things will always lead to debate.

I thought it was too when I looked at GB then noticed the SB era after commenting about NFL Championships.

Since 1966 (year of SB1), GB is 9th in regular season win percentage, Tied for 6-10 in SB appearances, 5th in total post-season wins, and 6th in post-season win% and tied for 4-6th in SB wins. 8th might be a little low, but

Steelers in the SB era are 2nd in reg season win %, tied 1st in SB appearances, 5th in post season win%, 1st in post-season wins, and 1st in SB wins.

Whatever, it's still flawed because you are counting games that were played before other teams even existed.
If you did the last 20 yrs on all teams, it would no doubt look vastly different.
But it is the off season, and we have to have something to talk about, so have at it.....
At least not awarding losers points makes it sound fairer anyway...

I wouldn't consider that a flaw. It's based on the SB era... since 1966. Ravens won 0 games for a lot of those years. If the NFL made an expansion team next year and they won the SB, I don't think that automatically makes them the best team in the SB era because we can only judge them on 1 season.

Looking at where Baltimore ranks, they would probably be top 5 in the past 20 years. And dead last the previous 30.

SF has 7 more post-season wins (3rd best playoff record vs. 11th best for Denver).

SF has 1 fewer SB appearance but 3 more SB wins.

Tough to put Denver ahead.

Steelers have only had 5 seasons with 6 wins or less since the merger in 1970; only 3 if you only count the seasons where the nfl went to the 16-game schedule in 1978.

Any ranking system has subjectivity which is why they are popular topics on the interwebs. You can make an argument that suits your team. And then you get the requisite dumbass (Oldschool) who are so offended by it. Like you just kicked them in the ovaries.

Feel free to tweak the system and update the rankings. I tend to agree with your arguments so re-evaluating the post-season points may be a good place to start.
