Wilson converted $6.26 million of salary to bonus, prorated it over remaining three years. Bonus payable immediately. Created $4.1M of room.

Then he bought Brown a 1st class ticket to Seattle, got him a room at the W, bought him dinner and a call girl.

I can't imagine there is a person happier about this move than Rus

For me, this team will be facing some serious transition by 2019. Guys like Kam, Sherm, and Earl will be declining if not already retired. Bennett almost certainly will be retired by then.

The one guy we can reliably count on to be in 2019 is Russ. As long as we keep him upright.

IMO, I don't think the team has given up on George Fant. He could still be the starting LT by 2019 but this gives him time to recover.
Yeah, could be at the cusp of a big transition around 2018. This is the last season Sherm & Kam play in their 20s, and contracts expire for Earl and Sherm after '18. Could be anticipation of that that in part drove the choices of all those DBs in this year's draft.

Agree on Fant. It looks like Duane Brown will be the guy at LT for the next season and a half, which is pretty good news, but this does buy Fant some time and maybe even present a chance to compete on the other side if Ifedi doesn't emerge as the clearcut starter. Backup OL play a ton anyway...

That's exactly what I was thinking. Not only does this take the pressure off of Fant to come back sooner than he's ready to, it also gives him a legitimately good, veteran left tackle to learn from for probably about a year and a half if Brown's contract doesn't expire until after next season and he isn't traded at any point during next season. This trade has the potential to have a long-term positive impact on the offensive line even if Brown's time here is relatively short. The more time I've had to digest this news, the better it looks for the Seahawks.

Yeah, this is definitely a big boost to that line. Of course, a stationary tackling dummy might be an improvement over Odhiambo at this point. I agree with most of you in that it will take 2-3 games for the chemistry to gel a little before the final push but by late season and into the play-offs, this could give the team a real shot at another SB run. Keeping RW upright and healthy has to be the teams primary concern from now on. He is the franchise.

AS for Lane, when will players learn that whining on social media will always turn on you. Jeremy, you were "bench" because the other guys were better. I think this will help the Texans secondary a little, though. That was where their need was. It might even help Lane to be a better player, who knows.

His current contract goes through 2018 according to overthecap.

Yeah. I saw that now. But he was holding out on that deal so he will want to renegotiate. I know the Hawks typically do not redo deals so it will be interesting to see how we go forward on this.

I am sure that could be something they can do, but it's not like the Hawks MUST work a new contract to keep him here through 2018. It may make some sense, but he's also 33/34 when this deal is up.

I agree the cost wasn't bad, but a 2019 pick is less than 2 years away from being a rookie.

Less than 2 is almost 3 ; )

Not sure how I was counting that wrong, but still.

So is this guy a stronger pocket protector or is his running game stronger? If our inefficient running game was not exposed already, the Houston game put it out there for everyone to see. Any upgrade to the OL is welcome but I hope this guy is a solid OLman to run behind.

It's an improvement regardless. You could be the 2nd worst run blocker in the NFL and you'd still be better than Odhi-useless.

So it is Brown for Lane, a 5th in '18, and a 2nd in '19.

It seems like a bit of an overpay for a 32 year old in the last year of his deal. Certainly an all in manuver.

Any news of a contract extension? It might seem worth it if we can lock him up for a few years and backload the deal with the signing bonus so we can free up space while the D is still potent.

Seahawks are betting this deal will give them a legit shot this year, Russ hasn't had the LT spot locked down since Okung held his own .... Duane probably has 3-4 years of football left, locking down that left side is so important... Hopefully the can work something out for several years with him and give Russ some security on his blind side...

Brown is a above average run blocker and a great ( not elite ) Pass blocker. Having both those grades together make him a probowl quality LT. I have seen many people/talking heads rate him as a High quality blocker in both Run and pass. Some have him rated 1 step lower on his run blocking over his pass blocking but lets be honest right here and now. He is a MASSIVE and i mean MASSIVE upgrade over Rees. Just go watch todays NFL Networks replay of the Texans @ Seahawks game and focus on Rees ( the LT ). He alone caused many and i mean MANY Run plays to go for ZERO or MINUS yards. All by his little self he did this. NFL Network showed a highlight reel of Brown and the reel they showed was Rees Odhiambo's last game against the Texans, showing how easy this moves automatically makes the Hawks better. That was kind of mean by NFL net but it was the cold hard truth. You Suck Rees and it's that plain and simple.

MJD said " he is only one piece of 5 he wont help much " i beg to differ. When you watch the play you see the LT's man in the backfield 8 times out of 10 on running OR passing plays. With Brown that should drop to around 1 or maybe 2 at the worst out of 10. Then Britt is a solid above average C, Aboushi is a below average RG but better than Glowinski at RG. Ifedi is bad at RT but he has improved from the start of the season and i think the Hawks just got to wait for Joeckel to come back and they should have a middle of the pack Oline. Maybe try Tobin at RT? Hey thats not a bad Idea no wait Pocic? he has been practicing there. Yeah they should stick Pocic in there and i think he upgrades the play over Ifedi. Then Move Ifedi Back to Guard where he played a little better than Aboushi is ( not much )

To this, I would say to MJD "then why the hell do LTs get paid so much money if they're just 1 of 5 and don't help much?" Just an absurd comment from a former player, especially a RB who had his career assisted by the blockers up front.

Someone contacted the Texans and said " we would have gave you more" so they poisoned the trade with a failed physical, it is a business after all, perfect way to get the MAXIMUM from the trade by putting the Hawks between a rock and hard place. I bet he passed his pre-trade physical with the Hawks Medical staff.

Seattle will get Brown and Houston's 2018 fifth-round pick in exchange for the Seahawks' 2018 third-rounder and their 2019 second-round pick. So still not a bad deal other than they now have Lanes Salary and cutting him won't help.

Can't wait to see what they do to get under the cap. Going to be a interesting few days. I think they need to free up another 2 or 3 mill just to break even and then they want to be like 1 or 2 under that cap for injuries just in case they need to sign someone.
