I really don't understand this. With all the drama surround Aldridge and the Spurs this off-season this is the most surprising thing that's happened in the NBA this year, imo. Did not see this coming at all.

Still could get traded though. 24M per year contract may look attractive to some teams.

Hold on....a guy signing an extension is more surprising than:

Kyrie/IT trade
Chris Paul to Houston
Paul George AND Carmelo to OKC
LeBron calling Trump a bum to the whole world (Twitter)
Tristan knocking up Khloe
(ok maybe that last one no surprise)

But the others, really?

Three years and $72 million for Aldridge.

Report: LaMarcus Aldridge and Spurs reach agreement on three-year, $72.3M extension
I have connections with Pop and he's obviously no dummy, but consider me skeptical on this one...
Because the player fits in really good with the type of offense and defense that the Spurs like to play and pay attention here because with Aldridge in the line up(even at that price) The Spurs will remain in the top 8 teams, in the playoffs and selling tickets. It's a business and Aldridge is making them money and by still playing for the Spurs and being in the top eight other players are more likely to play for the Spurs.

Elementary school...What a hoot.

He really did graduate HS with my uncle and they were good friends before my uncle's death in 2009...I don't have to prove it to a soul.

Oh, I don't doubt it. Still not a personal connection for you though. Your uncle, sure.

I think that the surprise is that the Spurs would settle for being top 8 and a playoff team. Holding out and signing a big name next summer could have put them back in the hunt with the big dogs. This is a very Spur thing to do, just not sure it is the right play.

Yeah, kind of hard to say. Pop and the Spurs aren't usually wrong on things like this.

LA was highly sought after when he became an FA and went to the Spurs. He didn't play well last season and actually looked lost at times.

Perhaps getting the extension and having his role more clearly defined will have him playing at a high level. If it does, then the Spurs have done it again.

If not, they could be stuck in 5-8 seed purgatory for awhile.

Personally, I'm betting the Spurs got it right....again.

No.

Hurricane's grandfather taught Pop in elementary school, they are tight.

I heard he was at a Spurs game and he saw him from stands and jizzed in his pants, he had a deep connection with him ever since

So what you're saying is your uncle knew Pop but you don't know him personally. Got it.

Cane and Pop are connected in a 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon kind of way.

Wasn't hurricane the fella that went on a rant about how so many in the NBA threads are constantly kissing the mod's asses?

Well yeah I guess of everything maybe the only one that would have surprised me was Kyrie wanting out. But even then when it was reported, it made sense and I could see Kyrie's point of view.

CP3 leaving was no shock to me. PG and Melo getting dealt didn't surprise me, although them landing with the Thunder did slightly.

But nope, this was legit surprising to me. There were so many reports of bad blood between Pop and Aldridge. If that was still lingering, you know for damn sure who's winning that battle in the franchise's eyes. On top of that it's the second consecutive season of Aldridge underachieving.

All indications were that at the very least he was out of there at the end of the year. Most reporters I saw thought he would get moved sooner rather than later.

Then out of nowhere he has a great discussion with Pop and that leads to a 3 year extension. That surprised me.

I'm willing to bet that nobody wanted his large contract after seeing how he played in the playoffs and they couldn't find a good trade.

I know, it's LaMarcus Aldridge, but still.I'm no NBA exec but I wouldn't want him after seeing how he performed without Kawhi in the playoffs.

I'm not happy with this extension at all. I wanted him gone as much as the next guy. But reading what he said about his discussion with Pop, I'm REALLY hoping he's settled down and accepted his new role finally and will start playing like we know he can. If not...this extension was all for nothing.

also, FYI, the Spurs' average age is 28.9. The Warriors' is 28.8, the Cavs are the oldest team in the NBA at 30 years old average.
