No what a tonneau cover means is that you live in an area like Northern Indiana where you get lots of snow and ice. The tonneau cover allows you to NOT have to constantly shovel out the back just to use it. Also it means you can use the bed of the truck to haul things when it is raining.

No, it means you don't need a pickup truck because anything that fits under the tonneau cover would fit in an SUV. The snow excuse is bullshit too, because if that was your goal you would just get a camper shell so you could still carry large items in your truck and the wind will take any snow build up off it while you drive unlike a tonneau cover that still has to be cleared off as its protected from the force of the wind by the cab.

4 wheel drive and I still put 250lbs of cat litter in the bed of my truck every winter. TCs do not reduce traction enough to matter.

So let me get this right.... you use a tonneau cover to keep snow out of the back of your pickup truck because apparently that prevents you from being able to use it.... then you put 250 lbs of cat litter in under your tonneau cover so you can get some traction in the winter?

Why the hate on tonneau covers? 4 clamps and it's off, my wife has one on her truck, as does my son.
They're both half tons, it's not like they're hauling around big loads every day. Keeps shit dry and out of the elements, and it's not big and ugly like a topper.

John.... dude... my egr coolor blew out after 27 k miles. they replaced everything with the "new" fix they "introduced" 1 year later. I am not complaining because they warrantied it and a ford team from detroit came and examined my truck. But i have heard horror stories. Guys with 500 miles past warranty EGR cooler clogged and blowing costing 3K.

A buddy has that kit you mentioned, and it has been solid.

Shows me how little you know about trucks or you are just not ingenious to come up with this idea. I have a box that sits right over the rear axle that has a top which holds the cat litter. I can still use the entire bed for whatever I need. See how that works?

I use the bed of my truck about 4 times a week. The thing about my tonneau cover is that I can fold it up to use the entire length and width of my bed. Just because you do not live in an area that has large amounts of snowfall means you are the end all be all on the use of a truck bed or tonneau cover? Got it.

Camper shells are downright useless for the large items that I carry. But yeah you know how I use my truck.

I used to have one of these where the hydraulic cover wouldn't come-off. Now THAT was worthless! It did hold groceries, my tennis racquets, golf clubs and a couple dead bodies nicely though.

I had an '04 w/ the 6.0. It blew the headgaskets at about 39,000.
I traded in on the '06 because they told me they had fixed the problems...lol
The '06 blew the egr cooler at about 50,000, under warranty so no cost to me, but still ended up putting the bullet proof kit in it. The problem was the head bolts, or lack thereof. Great motor after you put the ARP head studs and egr delete.

So wrong on so many levels. First of all weight doesn't need to be directly over the axle to be effective, the way the rear suspension attaches to the the frame any weight in the bed will transfer to the axle. You are over thinking it. I grew up in the Sierra Nevada mountains where it snowed around 220-240 inches a year. How much does it snow where you are? 30 or 40 inches in a good year? Lol

Yes they do add a couple MPG and with my trucks MPG I can use all the help I can. 16 highway and 12 city. That is what a Lift kit and 35s will do to MPG.

You build the box so the weight is directly over the axle... and so that the weight does not slide to the front of the bed where it will have minimal effect on traction. The more weight directly over the axle the more traction you will get. Then you should also in the winter take about 4 PSI out of your tires for more traction.

As far as snow fall that depends from year to year. I live close enough to Lake Michigan that I get Lake Effect Snowfall. Which takes a normal storm and multiplies it by about 5 or 6 times. Normal average is about 80-100 inches per year. Then because of where I live we also get a lot of ice storms which totals about 10 inches per winter. The ice storms are worse than the snow storms and we are not allowed to have studded tires in this state.
