I think everyone loved Benny.
I never heard that about Ned, that’s unfortunate. He did a lot for Wendell Scott though in the 60’s, and Petty wasn’t dominant until Ned, Junior Johnson and Rex White quit and Joe Weatherly and Fireball Roberts died
Petty had 40 wins when Jarrett retired, but I never noticed how Petty's wins per year jumped after 1965 before.
In the 60s and 70s there was a kind of unwritten feud between the drivers of USOC and NASCAR. Both would go race in the other series, but not be welcome there. Ned held onto that feud and was merciless with John Andretti. When Tony Stewart first started he would drive into a corner way to hard and let his car ride up the track into another car. Slowing himself down and normally wrecking the other driver. He did this at Pocono to Andretti and Ned Jarrett was screaming about how Andretti should have gotten out of Stewart's way and he didn't deserve to be on the same track.
Stewart put that move on one of the more popular drivers. When he did the fans and some of the announcers ripped into Stewart finally about it. He stopped doing it after that.
