You're wrong as usual, Stan.

1. Comparing Durant's salary to Gardner's is one point

2. Saying Gardner is pretty average at getting on base is another point

How do you not see that? As usual, you're arguing for the sake of arguing.

You're crying over the exact terminology and I'm the guy arguing for the sake of arguing?

For the sake of moving this discussion along before you need your diapers changed, can we just assume he used whatever word you think Bill James would have used to describe Brett Gardner's OBP? His point was simply that MLB's salaries are completely out of whack with what athlete's in other sports are paid. He specifically used Kevin Durant, a top 2 player, as a comparison.

Just to preempt your next complaint, no one cares where Bill James ranks Kevin Durant. The point is Kevin Durant is clearly an elite player regardless of where your god ranks him overall.

You're splitting hairs over the terminology but his point was just that Kevin Durant is the second best player in NBA making the same as Brett Gardner who isn't anywhere near the second best player in the MLB.

I didn't read anything about Kevin Durant in the post I was responding to.

If Trout's 2012 and 2013 seasons are a sign of things to come, then no, it's not ridiculous. If anything, that would be a bargain.

I think the salaries in MLB are completely out of hand. Trout is one heck of a player, but it's a bit early to give him over 20M per year.

I look at both. Don't really have a preference for position players, but I prefer bWAR for pitchers.

Which is why I put his statements into context for you.

OK, so I if I make a point that may be somewhat valid but then present ridiculous and inaccurate arguments in defense of it everyone should just give me a pass on the content of those arguments. Got it now.

Have you actually looked at his splits?

He hit 63 home runs at Yankee Stadium and 52 on the road during his time in pin strips. That's not exactly a tremendous difference.

I have! 99% of his HR's land in right field. Yankee stadium right field dimensions are generous, compared to Citi Field. Let's break down some numbers:

Citi Field
Deep right center 398 feet
Right center 375
Right field line 330

Yankee Stadium
Deep right center 385
Right center 353
Right field line 314

Care to guess how many of his HR's in the Bronx would have been fly outs in Queens?

This thread is....

:wtf2:

Agreed. Started off ok, now it went to shit.

The Rangers once gave out a 5-year, $80M extension to an inferior player.

I'm just amazed there's this much interest in Gardner.

Really? you are going to compare Gardner to Michael Young? Let me know when Gardner EVER collects 200 hits. That comment was ALMOST as dumb as this newest Yankee contract. I agree they over paid Young, but not an apples to apples comparison. :L

there's more to hitting than hit totals. Young might be the better hitter (though it's a lot closer when you factor in ballparks), but Gardner is a much better baserunner and fielder than Young ever was. Young was horrid defensively.

Based on last season's WAR, the salaries of the 5 OF ahead of him and the 5 behind:

Werth - $18
Jones - $13.1
Crisp - $8.65
Denorfia - $14.3
Choo - $18.6
Gardner - $12.5
Gordon - $9.4
Bautista - $12.8
Pence - $18
Harper - $2.15
Lagares - Pre-arb

He's in good company and making about the average.

So, this is a great deal for the Yankees. Especially with the team option for that 5th year.
