It's crazy the kind of contracts baseball players get compared to the other major sports

Brett Gardner is a career .268 hitter (no power) with speed and a nice glove and he gets 13 mil a year

Kevin Durant is a top 2 player in his sport and is making 17 mil a year

Of the four major sports Basketball has the highest ave contract at around 5 mil per.

Baseball was at around 3 mil per

football and hockey were both around 2 mil per.

I don't remember the exact stats and it was from 2013 seasons.

I would guess that the NBA has the highest avg contract, because their rosters are much smaller. Each team carries only 10-12 players whereas MLB and NFL have 5 times the roster space.

Was there another team out there who was willing to pay him that much or more? I don't think so. Seems a little steep for him but with the way money has been flying around the majors lately this is chump change

And hell, they're paying him with Arod's money anyways.....

How is Parra even better offensively than Gardner? Is defense alone enough to say Parra's "twice the player" that Gardner is (because he's certainly not better offensively), or does Parra playing for your favorite team lead you to overrating him?

Excellent thread. Not sure why, but I am reminded of the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer....

You forgot to mention he gets on base.

I like Gardner, but not for that much. Then again the Angels are thinking about giving Mike Trout 6 years 150M. Now that's ridiculous.

If Trout's 2012 and 2013 seasons are a sign of things to come, then no, it's not ridiculous. If anything, that would be a bargain.

50th in obp

64th in walks

69th in hits

Technically he "gets on base" but he's pretty average in doing so.

He had an OBP 24 points better than the AL average in 2013, and since the start of 2010 he has a .358 OBP while the league average is .323

I'd hardly call that being 'pretty average' at getting on base.

I'm sorry, I don't know all these advance stats, nor do I care for them in all honesty. All jibberish to me.

But, has Gardner come close to 30HR's in a season, answer me that?

Don't sit here and bash Grandy, when you probably enjoyed him as a Yankee, if you're a fan.

How can you say that you don't care for something while fully admitting in the same sentence that you don't know anything about it?

With 30 teams in the majors and 8 or 9 guys starting for each of them every night I don't see how ranking 50th can be considered average.

You'd think a Mariners fan would realize it after being subjected to so many god awful lineups over the years.

Granderson licked his chops with the short porch in right. It was no surprise he hit as many HR's as he did. He doesn't have that advantage at Citi Field.

Have you actually looked at his splits?

He hit 63 home runs at Yankee Stadium and 52 on the road during his time in pin strips. That's not exactly a tremendous difference.

You're splitting hairs over the terminology but his point was just that Kevin Durant is the second best player in NBA making the same as Brett Gardner who isn't anywhere near the second best player in the MLB.

When did I say it was ONLY about home runs? When comparing Grandy to Gardner for the prices they got, we're paying Granderson for his power, Yankees are not paying Gardner for that. They're paying for his glove.

I think it's probably more fair to say the Mets are paying him to placate an unhappy fanbase with a guy who is a relatively big name. At least their GM can say they tried when they turn in yet another dismal season.

I would take Gardner over Granderson for the simple reason that I always assume teams "know something" when they let a guy walk after back to back 40+ home run seasons, especially when that team has all the money in the world and he wasn't exactly asking for a king's ransom. If not for that, I would much rather have Granderson. I don't think defense is that important and that the difference between a great and terrible defender is much less then the difference between a great and terrible hitter. The worst thing you can say to a Bill James disciple is "I watched him play ..." so there is little real way you can evaluate defensive metrics and at best it has more to do with theoretical runs as opposed to absolute runs.

What does Kevin Durant have to do with him saying 'Gardner's pretty average at getting on base?' They're two separate/different points.
