I know that it is the GM's responsibility to put together a winning team, but it's difficult to give Z too much shit for the offseason he put together.
He landed Seth Smith who has been a lot more valuable at the plate than his .262/.325/.489 line would indicate. I'd be surprised if he doesn't have an OBP of at least .350 by the end of the season. Even though he strikes out at a fairly high rate, he's a hell of a lot more patient than almost our entire lineup put together. He actually looks like a professional at the plate to me.
Nelson Cruz has been hitting at a damn-near MVP level.
We didn't give up much for Happ and he has been a real solid #3 so far.
If you're going to criticize him for what's wrong, at least give him credit for what he did right. The Mariners have lost a lot of 1 run games, when you're losing games that close, it's not like you have a bad team. The Mariners have been a lot more competitive than their W/L record would indicate. Jack Z put together a team with a lot of talent on it, as evident by the fact that many had the Mariners as their AL WS representative. The things that have gone wrong were not predictable.
I understand the sentiment to want to replace Z, he has had his time and the Mariners once again have a losing record. Yet I do believe that he has done some good, and I feel like the Mariners could do significantly worse at GM than Z.
