There will always be an exception that proves a rule. If it was a viable offense, it would be dominant in CFB. But it isnt. The Show is a passing league. It is what it is.
The triple option is still viable in College Football. It is still dominate too in College Football. It is just ran out of the Shotgun in spread formations and includes a passing option. The only problem with the under center triple option is the lack of a real passing threat in modern College Football.

The 'next Pat' will get a little action in the bowl game. Trey Lowe... kid is no Murray, but he's really good!

Personally I hope Dana plays just one and doesn’t mess with two Friday. Well at least in the first half. If it’s Allison let him have a bunch of series. If it’s Lowe let him have a bunch of series starting off. Don’t do the qb by committee crap.

When I watched his HS film he reminded me more of Geno Smith rather than Pat White. That would work better with what Dana wants to do anyway. Geno was much faster than people gave him credit for (4.5 40 at the combine IIRC) but Dana would rather have his QB throw than run....

Of course Sky Howard wasnt a great passer but he ran well so he WILL run a QB if he has to.

I know this may sound crazy, and I haven't seen to confirm, but some folks are saying he runs like Pat and throws like Geno. Now, if that's even close to true, we have a winner, lol! Geno had the arm, Pat had the legs, the only person we've had w/ both was Major. I'm excited... and he could beat Jake in spring, who knows?

If run properly the option is extremely difficult to prepare for and defend.

Army took OU to OT so you can't completely dismiss the idea. It wouldn't be a long term solution and it wouldn't win a NC but could sneak in a conference title.

It all starts with recruiting. And opie was talking about pure halfback under center triple option.

You sure about that? I was actually thinking more along the lines of the pistol formation triple option but you are more than welcome to make assumptions.

Well, I thought I was sure. Maybe I didnt understand your post correctly.

I have been enamored lately with the USMA. You said triple option and that is where my mind went.

Army is led by former Georgia Southern HC, Jeff Monken. His version of the triple option is one that he learned as an assistant under Paul Johnson at Navy. Johnson refers to it as the Flexbone.....run from a spread formation.

The triple option has many faces. I'm more fascinated with the pistol version that Willie Fritz and Bob DeBesse ran at Sam Houston State. DeBesse had success with it for 6 years at New Mexico prior to becoming OC at Georgia Southern this season and leading the offense to a 10 win season after only 2 wins in 2017.

Mike Stoops is gone. OU will not run a 3 man front against a heavy run offense, hopefully. I watched a replay and saw ou run a hybrid 2 man front, with 2 true Dlineman and 2 LB's, on the Dline. Then we find out after the game how shocked Army was that we ran a defense they practice against EVERY day.

It works in the short term until teams with reasonable talent figure out how to defend it. If it is a Paul Johnson style then you have a problem after your initial recruits have left where you find that no new recruits are interested in playing in that offense. Other problems I have seen is that when a QB is forced to pass under constant pressure, he isn’t good at it and a drive will falter - Eric Crouch. Option QBs have to put in a lot of run practice time over Pass QBs, so when it is pass time, the completion % is way lower in obvious passing situations.
