USA wins vs Iran and they pass to 2nd round, I will take that.

Actually doing the math, if we assume England beats or ties Wales, the US can tie Iran and still advance. Both will have 3 points and then the US would win on goal differential. That's good because the US can play for the tie.
Oops. Duh. Then Iran will play for the tie which is a big advantage for themNo sir
Iran would have 4

This is the correct takeIf we can't beat Iran we don't deserve to advance
Upthread I was told if we can't beat Iran we don't deserve to advance. But won't Iran just sit back and stay on defense for the 0-0 tie? It won't reflect that we are better or worse, that seems like a pretty powerful advantage for Iran.
Obviously. Which means the US is going to be at a significant disadvantage. And if we just tie it won't mean because we suck. Tying Wales was more that.Iran typically plays defensively and looks for the counters at World Cup... did so vs Argentina in 2014. Messi scored goal nearly full time to win 1-0. With the present results in the table... I would expect it is even more likely Iran plays defensively and look for counters vs USA.

The reason Iran can play that way is because of their position in the table, not because they are 'better'. Our fate was sealed in not beating Wales. If the U.S. doesn't win, then we won't advance out of group play. If Iran ties the U.S. by playing defense and not worrying about offense, then they are the better team. The U.S. has a goal scoring problem, which I don't see changing if they mske it into the round of 16.
...not because they (Iran)are 'better'.
