Actually doing the math, if we assume England beats or ties Wales, the US can tie Iran and still advance. Both will have 3 points and then the US would win on goal differential. That's good because the US can play for the tie.

Argentina back to winning ways... 2-0 over Mexico, beating Mexico a bonus. Both coaches also former Newells players, and first goal in game by former Newells.

CONCACAF gets first win of World Cup, Costa Rica 1-0 vs Japan.

Huge game this afternoon with Spain v Germany.

Germany and Spain end in a tie.

Germany is on the bubble to go out. They need to beat Costa Rica, Spain needs to beat Japan, and Germany needs to beat Japan in goal differential to move on.

Brazil beats Sweden 1-0, advances to the round of 16 joining France. Portugal and Uruguay up next. If Portugal wins with a score, they will be the third team in.

Upthread I was told if we can't beat Iran we don't deserve to advance. But won't Iran just sit back and stay on defense for the 0-0 tie? It won't reflect that we are better or worse, that seems like a pretty powerful advantage for Iran.

Iran typically plays defensively and looks for the counters at World Cup... did so vs Argentina in 2014. Messi scored goal nearly full time to win 1-0. With the present results in the table... I would expect it is even more likely Iran plays defensively and look for counters vs USA.

Obviously. Which means the US is going to be at a significant disadvantage. And if we just tie it won't mean because we suck. Tying Wales was more that.

If the U.S. doesn't win, then we won't advance out of group play. If Iran ties the U.S. by playing defense and not worrying about offense, then they are the better team. The U.S. has a goal scoring problem, which I don't see changing if they make it into the round of 16.

The reason Iran can play that way is because of their position in the table, not because they are 'better'. Our fate was sealed in not beating Wales.

But agreed, they don't score much and aren't going to be lighting it up even if they advance.

...not because they (Iran)are 'better'.

We'll find out tomorrow if the U.S. is the better team. It doesn't matter if Iran is playing for the draw or not, if the U.S. can't break down the Iranian defense and score, they don't deserve to proceed to the round of 16.
