i agree with boss.. the spectacle is the outdoor part, not who is playing

i guess what the NHL is trying to do is have their 'best' shown in the game as well to get ppl to keep watching even when it moves inside.. problem is, like comeds said, the 'best' hockey is definitely not played outdoors

love the idea of making the all-star game the outdoor game.. because

1. it takes it off new years, and away from the college football bowls that hog ratings on new years

2. it eliminates the bickering between the teams playing, like the outrage that the pens are playing in it for the 2nd time in 4 years..

3. takes some of the edge off with where the game is played.. it can just move around the cold weather cities.. east, west, canada, not canada, and still have players that everyone wants to watch, including the NHL's golden boys every year they aren't hurt

4. the whole standings bit that has been discussed

I like the idea of it being the ASG. MLB and NHL are the only All Star Games I watch, and some years I dont care if i miss the NHL one. Making outdoors would change that.

Jeez, you're a fucking jerk if you're hoping it will fail. I've been looking forward to this game since it was announced (and so are a ton of other people). No love for diehard fans that just think it will be a good time?

And sometimes I hate Pittsburgh. We freeze our asses off for six months of the year and the one day we need it to be cold to turn rain into snow, it's going to be unseasonably warm.

This, not to mention you are hoping for an essentially runied day and a lot of wasted money for the flying forty_sixand2s.

Geez....

Seriously. I don't care if you're indifferent or hate the classic, but that's just being a dick.

And can people quit pretending that this game would garner as much attention if it was any two teams? HBO wasn't going to follow around Minnesota and Dallas. Hopefully when the Flyers, Wings, or Blackhawks play in one of the next two, people can just accept that certain teams are going to be picked for this type of event. It's not fair, but it's a business. Do NFL fans bitch about their teams not playing a Thanksgiving game? I'm curious. The NHL is 1) angling for a good TV contract this year and 2) trying to give this game an appeal that means it CAN be any team at some point in the future because people will tune in regardless.

This is especially key in a year where the NFL and NBA may be going into labor disputes, lockouts and cancelled games. This is a big opportunity for the NHL. That being said, i am not so sure that certain old school hockey fans, deep down inside, do not want the NHL to blow up in the US and do well for fear of eliminating their semi-condescending, esoteric platform that they love to play up.

I for one would love for it to become a big time sport in the US.

While I hate half-assed hockey fans... Agreed. Your still an ass though.

And I forget where I read this, but I read somewhere that the Rags turned down the first Winter Classic (in lieu of the Pens). The game was viewed as a bit of a risk as no one knew how much of a success it would be. I will try to find the article.

What exactly IS a casual fan. Professional hockey is certainly not my favorite sport to follow, and I do not watch every game that is on television. However, I played at a relatively high level, for two decades, understand the intricacies of the game and follow my team closely.

That being said, if I had the choice to watch a regular season hockey game between two teams I did not follow, or a random BCS level college football game, I would pick the football game 100 times out of 100.

Am I a casual fan??

I say no. To me the casual fan is the person that watches the hyped up games (since I'm a Pens fan...the games against the Flyers or Caps) and then follows the playoffs intently like they actually give a shit.

I would say you are not maybe a diehard because you put a sport before it, but I wouldn't consider you a casual fan.

Edit: A casual fan watches the game for water cooler talk, IMO. Yes, that fan can be swayed, but he/she doesn't actually care initially.

Move the game to LA
It never rains on New Years Day and the Temps should be about the same.

Rain is the biggest issue here. The next is too much sun (which is why LA may never get one). It is not the sun melting the ice, it is the glare on the ice making it hard for the cameras. A night game in LA would work, but that would make it really late for you East Coast people.

I hope the game gets played. If it doesn't I am worried that NBC may decide it is not worth it anymore and we may lose out on this fun event.
