He'd wanna Trademark the term, not copyright it anyway.
As for the Classic... I love it. I can't wait till the Pens play the Rags next year too!
The outdoor nature of the Classic is the gimmick to get new fans in the door, and there is nothing wrong with that. Putting your brightest stars on display once you get people watching is the best way to show people there is something exciting to be watched, so while some hardcore hockey fans may not like playing up OV vs. Crosby, it's a savvy business move and designed to turn casual fans into something more.
And since the event gets a ton of attention for the game and also for the teams, I do not think its right to have the same team involved in another so soon. I think its a marketing error, not a savvy business move. And I am sure the ratings will be big and to some it will justify the team selection, but I am not so sure that 2/3rds of the possible combination wouldn't have large ratings as well.
Do we really have a 3 page, 60+ post thread about the Weather?
We'll see what the ratings look like for the WC. I'd bet money it will be the highest-rated WC. And I think that does show something, b/c if you have Wrigley and Fenway as your venue in Original 6 hockey markets and you can't outduel Heinz Field, then it shows the teams/stars are more important than the venue.
Look, the NBA was flagging in the late 70s - arenas were nearly empty, TV ratings were in the tank, and people thought the game was too rough and tumble. Along came Bird and Magic - pretty much every weekend NBC would feature the Celts in the afternoon and the Lakers in the evening. It worked.
i agree with you on that point.. they should get more tv coverage than other teams.. but they dont need to get even more coverage by playing in the classic.. the classic will draw a solid rating by itself.. when it comes to regular season, in arena games, absolutely, put the stars on TV.. but this isn't a normal regular season game, its outdoors and will draw ratings simply for being outdoors.. i guess we'll see if it draws significantly better ratings, but until then, i'll reiterate that the one crosby played in before, also the first game of its kind (in america), did not have the highest ratings for a classic (det/chi beat that one, bos/phi was tied with the pens/sabres)
All I know is... the away team goes to the SCF!
interesting. Not this year, sorry buddy
Seriously. I don't care if you're indifferent or hate the classic, but that's just being a dick.
And can people quit pretending that this game would garner as much attention if it was any two teams? HBO wasn't going to follow around Minnesota and Dallas. Hopefully when the Flyers, Wings, or Blackhawks play in one of the next two, people can just accept that certain teams are going to be picked for this type of event. It's not fair, but it's a business. Do NFL fans bitch about their teams not playing a Thanksgiving game? I'm curious. The NHL is 1) angling for a good TV contract this year and 2) trying to give this game an appeal that means it CAN be any team at some point in the future because people will tune in regardless.
Oh, come on, Jeff. Starting rooting for them - you don't even have a team in the Southeast Division yet.
I hate you all.
Blame me and my bad luck for the weather. If I hadn't bought tickets for any events this weekend, the weather would have been perfect.
I still don't understand why they couldn't get a tarp that suspends just over the ice surface in case of rain.
