very happy with what holland did. filled the glaring need for a right handed puck moving defensman with zidlicky and added some size, speed, and grit with cole. Didn't give up much either one. Best trade deadline for holland since 2008 imo

As a hockey move, it was terrible. But ownership figures if they were paying 5.5m per season, they needed a body on the ice. They just don't have the pockets to pay a guy to not play.

The Wisniewski trade is the one that hurts. Clarkson... meh. He's bad, but he's a nice guy. Bourque is a lazy piece of shit and the other kid is an AHL player coming into an already crowded group of youngins. So they essentially picked up a 2nd round pick for Wiz and a third. Turrible. Just turrible.

I was waiting for Horton to get a job with the NHL.

Fucking Rangers fans...

wait...

But if the new guy you're paying is not good enough to be out there, what does it matter that he's playing? It's basically a sunk cost at that point.

Not on the deadline but Toronto did a great job with the Nashville and Clarkson trade. I am sad that Kessel/Phaneuf weren't moved but that has more to do so with me wanting to see Toronto melt.

Really happy as a Flyers fan. I've been calling to trade Coburn for a 1st for a while.

Liked the work by the Jets. Pulling for them if the Flyers don't make.

Sather better pray to God that the Rangers win a Cup before St. Louis is gone.
Phaneuf and Kessel were always more likely to be summertime moves. I think having Phaneuf on the Leafs only helps the tank anyway. I'm starting to feel terrible for Kessel, though. He looks like he's having to watch video of his puppy getting run over by a Mack truck every night.

I'm more pissed they couldn't find a taker for Bozak, but once again hopefully he can be moved in the summer.

That Coburn move shocked me. Didn't think he could return that.

St. Louis is UFA this summer, I believe. Given all the contracts he's handed out and traded for, I don't think Sather can afford him.

Biggest Winner Buffalo- any guesses which Jersey number Connor McDavid will wear.

Re Buffalo. Just want to point out that Buffalo is solidly #30 in the League today. This makes their odds of getting McDavid 20%. Thats it.

They can trade away a decent goalie, Stewart and anything else for a bag of used pucks and their odds on getting McDavid will STILL BE 20%.

The only way Buffalo improves those odds is if they get another pick.

To be fair, what they have done is pretty well guarantee they will either get McDavid or Eichel. Since finishing #30 means they cant go any lower than #29 after the ping pong balls exert their karma.

Come on Detroit!

I do like that the Devils have kept alive their streak of never making a trade with the Rangers alive, the only franchise they've never made a deal with.

As of today, Buffalo is only 3 points worse than Edmonton and 4 points worse than Arizona. Conceivably, Sabres players could develop "Major League" syndrome and rally to win a few games despite management's best efforts to secure last place. All this tanking could actually net them the 4th pick in the draft if Arizona and Edmonton have more successful tanks and some other team wins the lottery.

Let's not forget about Toronto, they were shutout in back-to-back games by identical 4-0 scores, they're doing their best to enter the McDavid sweepstakes.

No team is as threadbare as Buffalo is.

They won too many games early. How the fuck were teams losing to the Leafs in October and November?!

Thing with T.O. is the teams above them (Columbus, Carolina) are losing in spades, too. They could even wind up rising a couple spots.

This draft is important for the Leafs, undoubtedly, but next year's is far more. Assuming they trade guys like Kessel and JVR and get first rounders for them, and tank the fuck out, 2016 draft is when the Leafs are going to get their core of the future. Of course, pairing McDavid and Auston Matthews would be a dream :rapture:

Who was the last great player that the Leafs drafted early in the 1st round? Do we have to go all the way back to Lanny McDonald?

Leaf fans will say Clark, but yes it was Lanny.

This team has not drafted well.

I will say that Morgan Rielly looks like he could be a very good defenseman for the Leafs, he has all the tools.

Leafs need to draft another blue chipper over the next two years. Gardiner is never going to be what they hoped, and Rielly needs someone on his level to play with.

Keep in mind that it's not just drafting well, but properly developing the guys you do draft.
I think the Leafs did fine with that over the 2000s. Guys like Antropov and Ponikarovski were never going to be more than they were, and the Leafs managed to squeeze 50-60 point seasons out of those two, not to mention Kaberle. They also drafted Rask and Steen, for what it's worth, and Colaiacovo was promising until he entered concussionland.

None of these guys are stars, though, and while the late 90s/early 2000s drafts were almost bereft of superstars there's no excuse for what's happened in the past ten years. When the high points from 2006-2010 are Kadri and Kulemin when your team's been missing the playoffs constantly, that's a problem.

Oh yeah, I forgot that Rask was a Leafs draft pick (traded for Raycroft before even playing one game for Toronto, that one stings).
