Who are your winners and losers of this deadline? I'd say the Flyers did pretty well amassing four picks(1st, 2nd, a 3rd and possibly another 3rd or 4th) along with Radko Gudas for Braydon Coburn and Kimmo Timonen - also I think Detroit did really well getting Erik Cole and Marek Zidlicky for not very much

Losers I would say Boston didn't really upgrade that much - Brett Connolly is young and might still have potential but it's not a huge move and Max Talbot is more of a depth guy - I think San Jose dropped the ball too because they traded a few of their depth guys but they're stuck in that mode where they're not a great team but they're not in a position where the future looks like that bright - if they were going to make trades, they should have made some bombshells considering the value some players ended up fetching

i just think Montreal did swell with gaining so much depth and giving so little in return. the biggest loser has to be Edmonton for not really doing anything substantial to improve that team. leading up to the deadline Toronto dumped some cap salary and dead weight and got somewhat decent picks back to them.

You'd think Doctor Wilson would have at least dumped Nemo. I feel like I own a car that runs on Diesel, but I continue to fill it up with 87, because it's cheaper.

I was waiting on them to move him but I think the goalie market is a bit hard to judge right now - it could probably open up in the offseason but I think it would have been hard to get something done now

But there were other guys they could have moved too

I agree with Matty, I like what the Habs did and the Rags are definitely all-in with the Yandle trade. Nashville was very quiet, I would have liked to see them pull the trigger on a deal as I think they still lack some offensive punch up front.

/As mentioned earlier, I like what the Flames did, solid asset management by acquiring picks for players who were not going to be part of the future going forward.

I wish Pittsburgh would have sent Despres to Calgary in exchange for Engelland.

That one puzzles me. I really have to question the strategy of this particular trade. The only thing that I can come up with is Rutherford knows what he's going to get with Ben Lovejoy. There's no ceiling that he's still trying to reach, which is definitely still the case with Despres. Simon Despres lived in the doghouse while Bylsma was coach of this team. When Johnston arrived, Despres finally was given the opportunity to show what he could do, and by most accounts, proved that he has talent and ability. I guess they weren't willing to wait any longer.

As for the Cole/Bortuzzo swap.. I think JR won that trade. Bortuzzo is a #7, and he stood little chance of playing in the post-season, unless injury dictated it. Cole isn't above a 3rd pairing guy, but his fancy stats show he's ahead of Bortuzzo, which is a win in my book.

I love the addition of Winnik. He's exactly the type of player the Pens needed in their bottom six.

Despres has been up and down a bit this year (more ups than downs), but in the past few weeks the trend has been down. From everything that Jimmy said in the presser it was an issue of not trusting so many young guys, which gives me hope that they roll with Pouliot in the top four. Overall, our top four remains untouched with Martin-Letang, Pouliot-Ehrhoff, and the bottom pair got deeper/more experienced/in some ways better with Scuderi/Cole/Lovejoy. And, should Pouliot have any issues in the postseason they don't have to put a guy like Bortuzzo out there.

EDIT: Also, Winnik was exactly what the doc ordered. Saw him in person yesterday, and he's great on the forecheck, has surprisingly nice hands, and is a BIG man.

Don't understand the Blue Jackets trade for Clarkson. Seems like a loser to me at that cap hit, though I don't think they are in trouble with the cap or anything.

Since they (the Jackets) didn't insure Horton's contract, they were on the hook to continue to pay Horton and unfortunately it's very doubtful that Nathan will ever play again. The Leafs have vast resources and $6 million is a drop in the bucket, the more valuable item is the LTIR cap space (since the Leafs are a cap team, unlike Columbus). The Jackets get a healthy player and hope that he can re-gain the form he showed in New Jersey. Pretty good trade for both teams, in my opinion.

its clear cap circumvention that really is a loop hole that needs to be closed. since they did it on long term contracts they should do it for this as well and penalize both teams

Maybe we should just get rid of the cap all together, Matty?
