Obviously New York is really high on this player who was responsible for D'antoni leaving back in 2012. Carmelo said he would not resign if D'antoni was still the coach, so Mike D resigned. Now in a second power struggle in which Phil Jackson tried to talk the player into accepting a trade, he is also gone. Granted that neither Mike D'antoni nor Phil Jackson were worth keeping - why not blow that up and rebuild completely. ?

They are trying to get rid of him. Not so easy though, because he has a no trade clause and a terrible contract. The Knicks aren't high on him at all.

Seems like to me they really tried to go the distance to begin with and never should have resigned him

They really didn't have a lot of choice. Jackson didn't want to resign him. He knew is was a bad deal, but the league structure kind of forces your hand. Letting him walk leaves them with nothing. So, they either rebuild from scratch or take him back. It is easy to say what the best choice was in hindsight, but much harder to make that choice in reality. Melo was always going to command a max deal, just a question of who was paying it.

Im not giving up on Mello

He is literally the only thing worth a shit on that Knicks roster, excluding the games KP doesnt actually miss due to injury........Im curious to see what he does when he isnt receiving all the defensive attention, playing with actual talent around him

I think that was the owner that wanted Carmelo more than anything really. Then again Phil dissed Porzingis and pissed him off too

I still think he's a great player, not what he once was but still a guy that can be a good add on any team.

I think Melo is a losing NBA player... and one who is in clear decline, at that.

Melo is a not a player you can build around. He just isn't.

He is Vince Carter without the highlight hops & dunks. He is a version of Glenn Rice who gets unlimited shots.

You don't like Porzingis? He would be even better without Phil Jackson and his retarded triangle.

LOL at a fellow Laker fan criticizing the triangle.

Melo is a solid player, but these days you need multiple stars to contend. The Knicks are a prime example of what happens when you trade for a soon-to-be free agent when he will come for free in a matter of months. The Knicks were impatient and gave up all their trade assets, leaving a shell of a team for Melo to come to. Lakers/PG13 relate intended. The Knicks were over .500 at the allstar break before trading for Melo. They dumped Gallo, Chandler, Mozgov, Koufos, and a 1st rounder to the Nuggets and Randolph and Curry to the Wolves in turn for Melo, Billups, Sheldon Williams, Anthony Carter, and Brewer. They managed to make the playoffs, but were swept out in the first round. Donnie Walsh left at the end of the season and the front office has been poor ever since. Still, Melo's Knicks went to the playoffs 3 years in a row, doing a little better each year.

Of course, the Knicks should've done a better job of building around him all these years (many of the guys coming in, including a rotating stable of PGs, were at the end of their careers like Billups, Bibby, Kidd, etc), but the leadership from ownership on down has been horrible. Trading for Bargnani? Trading Tyson Chandler for Calderon and trash (Phil's first trade)? If Phil was going to make the Knicks run the triangle, he should've been on the sideline coaching.

According to one person in the NBA offseason thread he'd be a nice backup option....to Heyward if he doesn't sign with the Celtics.

I think the triangle worked fairly decent in Phil Jackson's first run from 2000 to 2005, but make no mistakes about it. The NBA changed after that and more teams picked up the tempo and the players dumbed down. They find it easier to run faster and shoot faster. The triangle is too slow for that. Phil Jackson even in the early years used to get crucified on the screen, pick and rolls. Melo is a solid player if your team depends on isolation play and hero ball, but if the team depends on a team effort with good passing and finding the open man - Carmelo is not that man. He stops the ball movement, dribble dribble, spin, dribble dribble and shoot

Truly one of the most overrated players in the history of the game in my opinion.

I have never been a fan of Carmelo Anthony and yes, I think he is over-rated. I can just only dream about what the Thunder would have done if they had kept Ibaka-Chandler-Hardin-Durant and Westbrook together
