Why would they do that? If they want to hire Atkinson, just hire him. The only reason Nash/D'Antoni at all wasbecause of their prior relationship and Nash had basically no coaching experience, let alone head coaching experience.

Ham is an experienced assistant who is considered a rising coach. No reason for him to feel the need to have a babysitter and doubtful that Atkinson is going to want to babysit someone for 2 years so that he might become a HC then...when he can likely get a HC job sooner than that.

They may have and it hasn't been reported. I remember hearing an interview where he said that he came pretty close to it when Kobe was there.

Although, in the couple of interviews I heard during his last season, he sounded like he was truly done. Might have been a "Mike...we had to call" and he said "I'm done coaching" and that was the end of it. lol
