Loom who they played in those Games and look at how many turnovers Elway had that lead to those scores.

Also remember they were playing against better teams in all 3 losses.

The Broncos defenses were always ranked pretty high in the regular season.

In closing Elway is overrated, fact not opinion...

Against the Giants, Elway had one interception. Meanwhile, the Broncos defense allowed Phil Simms to set a Super Bowl completion percentage record by going 22-25 for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Against the Redskins, Elway had 3 picks, the first of which came after the Broncos were already down 28-10. Only the first turnover led to any points for Redskins. Meanwhile, the Broncos defense allowed the Redskins to rack up 35 second quarter points, with 21 of those touchdowns coming off of plays that went over 50 yards. Doug Williams finished the day 18-29 for 340 yards and 4 touchdowns, and Timmy Smith set a Super Bowl record with 204 yards rushing, along with 2 touchdowns.

Against the 49ers, Elway threw 2 picks, the first of which came to start the second half after the Broncos were already down 27-3. Meanwhile, the Broncos defense allowed Joe Montana to go 22-29 for 297 yards and 5 touchdowns, Jerry Rice caught 7 passes for 148 yards and 3 touchdowns, and the 49ers scored touchdowns on 8 of their first 10 drives.

But yeah, it was all Elway's fault the Broncos defense got shredded in the Super Bowls.

He still sucked, no matter how beat up their defenses were those games Elway still sucked! Instead of 55 - 10 against the 49ers how about giving your team hope and losing 55 - 38

Not what we're debating. You claimed he had a good defense. I'm debunking it by showing that the so-called good defenses got shredded in the Super Bowls.

You didnt debunk chit, look at how the defenses were ranked in the regular season. The fact they got smashed by a better team in ONE game doesnt mean the defense sucked!

1986 : 15th in points allowed : 9th in yards allowed
1987 : 7th in points allowed : 9th in yards allowed
1989 : 1st in points allowed : 3rd in yards allowed

Looks like I was right... :suds:

Agreed, we tend to romanticize past players. But Montana who is from the 80's is still the GOAT... IMO anywho...
I remember trying to use that against use in an NFL All Time Mock Draft. Most people had Marino and Montana as a push (which is mostly justifiable) and I wasted a top pick.

If you're looking for a line of best fit when it comes to QBs, Brady hits the most 'bests' regardless of bias.

The only season that I would call good was 89, and we all saw what happened in the Super Bowl. In 86 there were 28 teams, so that defense wasn't even top half of the league. The 87 team played in a weak division and faced a pretty easy schedule (the two best teams they played were the 11-4 Bears who scored 29 on them, and the 9-6 Oilers who put up 40). Their defensive stats were inflated by two shutouts, one over the Lions who finished 4-11, and one over the Chargers in the last game of the season who had already been eliminated from the playoffs.

If anything is overrated, it's the defenses on those 80s Broncos teams.

What about randall Cunningham? I haven't seen his name mentioned in the conversation but didn't he have a cannon for an arm?

The NFC was vastly better than the AFC in those Super Bowl years. Winning the AFC was like being king of the dipshits back then. Dan Reeves was also a horrible play caller. I swear he had Elway in 3rd and long most of his career (and liked to run a draw or a fucking shuttle pass in that situation). As stated earlier, he never had a ton of talent around him on offense until the mid 90's.

Elway's peers respected his ability and he certainly did more with less than most QB's that ever played.
Thank God they put it together for back to back SB wins and Elway got to leave the field in glory having completed one of his best games ever (subsequently named Super Bowl MVP).

So a team cant be good if it faces bad teams? Other teams played the shitty teams the Broncos faced didn't they? The 86 defense was top third in yards allowed as were the other two teams. They simply got mashed by much better teams in the Super Bowls and Elway did nothing to help the cause. His game against the 49ers alone eliminates him from any talk about GOAT.

Five times in his career he threw as many INT's as he did TD's, let me guess it was someone else's fault... lolzzz

Again, if not for Terrell Davis Elway finishes his career with ZERO rings...
