Multiple publications out of Japan are reporting that Seiya Suzuki has agreed to a five-year deal with the Cubs.

Tokyo Sports has it as a $70 million agreement, which would be the largest contract ever for a Japanese player. More to come, assuming these reports are true.

Huh

Figured he would end up on the west coast

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Royals have signed Zack Greinke to a one-year, $13 million contract.

There is another $2 million available in innings-based bonuses, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Greinke began his professional career in the Royals organization and won a Cy Young Award in Kansas City back in 2009, so this should be a fun reunion story. The now 38-year-old right-hander pitched to a 4.16 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 120/36 K/BB ratio over 171 regular-season innings with the Astros in 2021.

Reds signed INF Donovan Solano to a one-year, $4.5 million contract.

The news was already spoiled by the sudden arrival of a Solano nameplate inside the Reds' spring training clubhouse. The 34-year-old should be a candidate for regular playing time on the Cincinnati infield in 2022 following the trade of Eugenio Suarez. Solano doesn't have much power but slashed .328/.362/.459 in 431 plate appearances with the Giants between 2019-2021.

Padres signed RHP Nick Martinez to a four-year, $20 million contract.

The deal was agreed upon way back on December 1 but is just now being finalized following the nearly 100-day MLB/MLBPA lockout. Martinez looks like a strong candidate for the final spot in the Padres' season-opening starting rotation after registering a 1.62 ERA and 146 strikeouts over 149 2/3 innings (23 starts) last year for the SoftBank Hawks in Japan. He should have late-round intrigue in fantasy drafts.

Perfect landing spot for him. He can help coach some of the young kids.

Do you really want a guy like Greinke influencing your young players? Greinke is a WEIRD dude…
He can show them how a major leaguer handles situations. Yes he is a bit strange, but he knows his stuff.

Holy shit.

he will put up numbers there, but they will be complete park numbers. In a neutral park, he is a .850 OPS hitter. At Coors, he might be a .950.

Yeah this was totally about getting paid.

Rockies blow.

Which also makes me wonder why they even did it.
