I'll take the 'average metrics' of .293/30/102 over six seasons any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

For a full-time, every day first baseman. That isn't very good. It sure isn't worth his pay grade. His OBP is also rather abysmal.

He is also clearly declining.

Well - he did lead the league in RBIs last year - that's not average.

Yet, his WAR, WRC+, wOBA, etc. was totally average. It didn't make up for how average he is. RBI's are also a rather antiquated stat. It's far more dependent on the situations you come up in and the timing of your hits. Who hits in front of you, etc. Versus how good or productive of a hitter that you are.

Fangraphs explains it pretty well:

Stats To Avoid: Runs Batted In (RBI)

I agree his extension was a tad rich, but these days players like Abreu receive premiums for historical performance. I just hope the Sox can get to the playoffs so he can experience that before he hangs it up.

I actually feel like receiving premiums for your historical performance is less of a thing nowadays.

The thing about the technologically/mathematically advanced era we're in - it's supposed to cut through bias towards certain players.

From Rick Renteria to whoever was behind the Abreu extension. The White Sox have too many shot callers ignoring their analytics department. While every perennially successful team (in every major sport) is driven by it in a pretty big way. NFL slowly (finally) becoming the last one to come around with Baltimore, KC, etc. diving headfirst into it and succeeding.

It's the intangibles. Who's going to play daddy to the pups? ;)

I think you answered your own argument - Abreu didn't win the RBI title - because he was protected in the lineup - or was on the lowest scoring team in the MLB. But he is a guy who can get you a sacrifice fly or move the runner over - as well as hit 30 hrs a year. In my view - also - he's been a timely hitter.

He did have the benefit of having Anderson and Moncada with two surprisingly good years batting right in front of him - and both have speed to run the bases, but neither one of them has a particularly high on base percentage - which limit the opportunities he has for RBIs.

Yermin Mercedes called up to the bigs - TA to the injury list. He is the kind of guy - that if they put in in the battling order - they might not be able to get him out.

Don't give a crap. Those are good, steady numbers and as I stated previously, I'll take them any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

10 day list - hope it's at the minimum. Sometimes those short injuries tend to spread out in length. We need Timmay's table setting bat in the lineup.
