I drank until I was 20. A couple of buddies and I would leave the ship, catch a bus in Oakland and ride over the bridge to San Francisco. We'd walk up Market St. to the New York Steakhouse and get a salad, steak, and baked potato for $1.39. We'd finish and walk up to the "Establishment" on Geary St. The owner sold us 20 oz mugs of Olympia Beer on draft for $.50. we'd drink from 2 pm until he closed at midnight. Then we'd walk back down to Market St. and back to the bus terminal and catch the bus back to Oakland and back to the ship. We never walked back to the terminal sober.

The last time I did this, I was walking back to the terminal and was across the street from it. I stepped off the curb and got hit by a taxi cab. Flipped over the hood on to my feet and laughed and kept walking.

I spent the next day in Sick Bat with three drains in my left side to drain the blood and keep it from becoming infected. Two weeks later was New Year's Eve and I had my last drink that. My best friend's girlfriend and his sister came out from PA and we took them to the Fairmont Hotel New Year's Extravaganza. Remember, this is 1969 going into 1970 and that New Year's party cost $115 per person. That included an open bar all night. This girl had been with me for three days and wouldn't even kiss me. On New Year's she's lying naked in bed beside me and I'm so drunk, that the only thing I can do is pass out. She wasn't in the mood in the morning and they flew back to PA on New Year's Day at 4 pm. We had lunch at Alioto's on the Wharf with Walter Matthau. I treated this girl to four days in Frisco, New Year's at the Fairmont and lunch will a Hollywood actor and got one kiss at the airport.

I quit drinking that day.
