This is a phenomenon I will never understand.

You and me both. I still have no clue how my one brother ended up a die hard ND fan. Yet he lives in Illinois, has season tickets to ND games and drives almost 4 hours just to get there every home game.

I cut my little brother some slack -- he fell in love with Duke as a kid, because they had white kids on the team (bobby hurley christian laettner, etc.) and has been all about Duke ever since, even when they play Michigan. Football though, he is all about UM.

Lighten up, Francis. This thread isn't about you either.

Come on -- I was just trying to have a little fun with this. I wasn't being serious. I couldn't care less who roots for who.

#1. Must support said team through good times and bad times, through winning and losing etc.

#2. Must be knowledgeable in said team's tradition and history.

IMO.

What happens if said team you root for has never had this thing called "good times"? Though I guess with the Lions, we went undefeated in the preseason one year. :)

What level do you need to be in order to tell others if they are a fan or not?

You're not very bright. Anyone can be a fan of who ever they like. I can't say you're not a fan. But I can say, since you have no real connection to the team other than just saying you're a fan it explains why you don't care about how the players or coaches conduct themselves as long as they win.
Try reading this a few times. It sounds like things sink in slowly with you.

Ah, so I need to share your opinions about things, otherwise it means I have no care for the school and anything other than winning.

Because you're opinion on things you don't even know 10% of the details on means more than mine. I'd have to be an idiot to figure Saban knows the situation and what's the best way to handle it.

I guess I need the opinion Alabama should shut down it's football program so I can be the bestest fan ever.

I don't know who you're trying to fool. Anyone who's been on this board in the past few years and isn't a blind Bama homer knows you couldn't care less what Saban does or says or what the players do so long as they win. You've said it enough times yourself. So spare us with this act. Just be you. Unapologetic Bama fan. I'll be man enough to congratulate you and the team you follow if they win in Sept.

Bama football. My number #1 team. Don't ask any questions. I have a friend from there. Seriously I actually do.

And social jim, you will get slapped the fuck down by them. I don't like it either but it's happening. Plus 13.5? It will be much, much worse than that. And that's why I back the Saban machine. Let's all get behind a winner, the very best CFB has to offer.

No one has said (that I know of) that a person can't be a fan. It's the lack of understanding from some that you're claiming to be a fan of a team of a college. Not giving a shit what is done by the student athlete or the coaches as long as they win is what some or most have an issue with. The fact that you have no connection to the school is a reason they probably don't give a shit. If you , your dad or your kid has a degree from there you actually care what peoples perception of the school is. I also have a connection to the Marine Corps. When i hear a story of a Marine doing some stupid shit , it upsets me. Get that?

Respectfully disagree. There are USC fans who never attended USC and get plenty upset when something happens that paints the school and/or team in a bad light. There are also USC alums who don't care what happens as long as the team is winning. I know a couple of each type.

I think that if you are a fan of your team, through the good and the bad, then no one has any business questioning your fandom. The only fan that bothers me is the bandwagon fan.

Anyone can be a t-shirt fan.

I think at a minimum you have to be with your team through thick and thin. Everyone wants to follow a winner but if you pick a team for whatever reason and stay there when they aren't a winner then it's cool.

I still keep alums and townies at a higher level though. It's one thing to be a fan. It's another to have a deeper connection with your school.

I'm not questioning how much of a fan he is. I'm saying he doesn't care how or what they do to have to win. He's a fan he's just a certain type. I'm not saying there aren't those types of fans at USC. I don't like fans who get drunk and act like idiots either. I've seen those at SC games too. But I wasn't responding to them .I was responding to this bama fan.
