From another thread:

Okay. I'm not trying to point fingers at anyone. Just trying to get a sense of the Hoop, if you will. Also, it should be noted that I fully recognize the economic reality that NO FBS program could survive without the economic contributions (through attending games, buying shirts and caps, direct donations, etc.) offered by people who are not alumni.

So - what is the bare minimum threshold one needs in order to fairly clam fanship of a team?

I dont know.

All I know is why I'm a fan. I was raised an OU fan. My folks were fans and thus I'm a fan. I did have a small stint as a Miami Hurricane Fan during the late 80s, even have a Starter Jacket to this day, but I try to shun those memories and that bitch is locked up in the closet collecting dust.

No. The main reason I was drawn to them was because I could watch 95% of their games. I didn't have DirecTV until 2002 or age 16(lived in the middle of nowhere and cable wasn't an option). They were on NBC, ABC or CBS every week, no other team in the mid to late 90's had that type of broadcast schedule. If you were on a lot I was drawn to them. Main reason why I like the Yankees, Minnesota basketball and the Eagles.

that's the reason the Yankees, and later also the Cards, were America's team way back when: they both were on the radio nationally.

Hear the generations before me talk about that alot.

Back in the day it was pretty much like that for everyone. I've probably listened to more Alabama games on the radio than I've watched.

Not sure if it is a national thing or just regional, but we've got a lot of Cubs fans in our area because their games were always on WGN which we got on TV.

Personally I'm a Cubs fan because my family is originally from Chicago and my uncle and mom are big Cubs fan.

But I always watched their games on WGN when I was little. That and the Braves on TBS. My little bother is a Braves fan, and I imagine it being on TV all the time had something to do with it, although it's not uncommon to see Braves fans in Alabama.

KMOX baby! Ya I'm old....listening on an AM transistor radio, fading in and at critical times, leaving you to wonder what happened in the time it was static. Great stuff!

Be an explicit fan of that team over all other teams and stick with it through thick and thin. (Only some incredibly dire situation should cause you to stop being a fan, eg, institutional cheating or *cough* Baylor *cough*)
