What is necessary to claim to be a fan of a particular program?

Not sure if it is a national thing or just regional, but we've got a lot of Cubs fans in our area because their games were always on WGN which we got on TV.

yes, that started with cable and WGN, like you pointed out. Just a later version of the old radio days Yankees.

this is similar to Texas. A whole bunch of people apply, but only some can get in. But they're still fans, depending on where they did in fact go...I mean if they end up at a rival, they are not going to be fans.

acceptance/admittance standards fluctuate in direct proportion to application rates.

anybody can fan any sports program for whatever reason they want...
whether you're a graduate or never attended - if your sports program beats mine you can have at disrespecting me and mine...but
unless you're a student/graduate of the school you fan, you can go to hell if you try to diss the school I graduated from or those I graduated with.

Back in the day it was pretty much like that for everyone. I've probably listened to more Alabama games on the radio than I've watched.

I too have watched fewer games on the radio than I have listened to.

Don't show up on message boards right after your team wins a natty and start proclaiming how you have been a fan since birth just b/c you google and wikipedia historical facts about your team and try to play it off as if you knew that shit all your life.

Pro sports, it doesn't matter how/why you're a fan of a team. Bandwagon all you want for different teams. College is different. College football is more sincere. You don't have to go to the actual school in order to be a fan. I know a lot of Longhorn fans who didn't go to UT who are more passionate about the Horns than some of the people I went to school with at Texas. Hell, I know plenty of people who didn't go to UT but have had season tickets for football, basketball and baseball season forever. Just b/c you watch your team on TV doesn't make you a true fan. Go to some games, support the school financially. Cheer for the other sports your favorite school participates in. Don't just support the football team. Be a real fan, support everything.....

This right here ^^^^^. Not that I receive a lot of backlash regarding the academics at Texas, b/c it is one of the finest public universities academically, but every now and then you get some Aggy fan who went to Blinn JC for a semester try to downgrade UT's academics when he never went to A&M. You have to earn the right to ridicule another university's academics.
