REPORT: NFL Removes Poorly Performing Refs From SNF Game, Assigns Them To The Patriots Eagles Game. -

The NFL has an announcement to make: Referee: Pete Morelli and his officiating crew are not good enough to handle a prime-time game. But they’re plenty good enough to officiate the Patriots’ game.

This news developed Tuesday morning, when Mike Florio reported that Morelli’s crew was being taken off the Sunday night game between the Colts and Steelers after that crew performed poorly this past Sunday in the Cardinals-49ers game.

Brief history lesson: Morelli was the referee for the controversial wild-card playoff game between the Lions and Cowboys this past January. Morelli’s crew on Sunday at one point forgot how to count downs. As in, the officiating crew didn’t know what down it was. -

The rationale is probably "even with terrible calls, the Pats will rail the Eagles".

Morelli's crew is terrible. I'm not sure who is worse, him or Jeff Triplette.

You need to start an excuse thread for a game against the Eagles?

It's called a "bet hedging thread", sir. Something very innocuous that can be pointed to afterwards to say "see, I claimed we would lose".

YUP! Worst ref I ever recall watching. Moving to the broadcast team (where he is still terrible) was the best thing the NFL could do.
Whenever Mike Carey says that a call should or should not be overturned, I expect the opposite to happen. It usually works.

I don't know that he could have looked any more incompetent than he did on the Catch/non-catch call by Wheaton (I think it was?) in the Seattle game. He said "I just don't see enough evidence to overturn this call (catch made)". He says that as the entire world is looking at video evidence that the ball was clearly not in the WR's hands. He caught it, and then as he repositioned the ball, it was clear as day that the ball was not in either hand, by the time he got his hands back on the ball, he only had 1 foot in bounds. The entire world saw it. Even steeler fans admitted to seeing it. And yet, somehow, he didn't see it? Gads.

Will Gronk be playing in this game?

If so, watch for more OPI calls against him

At least the NFL is paying attention on some level...what I found funny last weekend, there was a challenge and they brought in the NY ref for commentary...twice in one game...the NY official saw the call differently from the game ref. And both times the game ref refused to overturn a blown call, essentially staying with the call on the field citing it wasn't irrefutable evidence.

This points to a bigger question imo...why does this continue to happen in the most lucrative sports league in the world? The human element is always prone to error...I get that, but I think to get full time refs, and a better replay system, it will take a rogue owner to sue the league when they lose a game due to a bad call...like BAL did a few weeks ago.
