NO, The man closelined Drew Brees. The tackler had more than enough time to target Drew lower and he decided not to. He then goes on and complains to the media about the call. He had one thing right and that's the fact that it was a crucial play. How hard is it to go for the midsection?

No. Defenders know as well as anyone that you cant go high, especially on a superstar QB. Refs will err on the wide of caution. Plus they had opportunities after that to win the game.

I thought it was a correct call, but I can understand why Brooks might disagree and find it frustrating. Looked as if he definitely tried to hit Brees across the shoulder/chest area, but his own upper arm got into Brees' neck. Thought the commentator's comment about Brees being a few inches shorter than most QBs was interesting, since that few inches likely made the difference between a clean hit and a penalty on that play.

I think the correct call was made. We all have to remember the refs are making that call at game speed in a mass of bodies. When you see it at full speed it appears he did hit Brees high in the neck area. that call has to be made.

The call was correct. I've seen a lot lesser shots on QB's head / neck called, therefore this one qualifies.

I'm really not sure what the defender was supposed to do there. Brees is a short guy, hard to go lower on him without lowering your head, and then you've got another penalty. Guess he should have gone even lower, except he can't dive at his legs, either.

It was probably the right call according to the rules, but I really think it shouldn't be a penalty. You've got to be able to hit the qb somewhere, ESPECIALLY when he still has the ball.

I agree that all those things factor in, height of both players, preffered target area etc, but in the end and IMO it does look like he hit the neck.

Looked like the initial contact was to the chest, though, and then he slid up and hit the neck. Hard to prevent that in that situation.

If you want to penalize guys for hitting the neck, I think it would be better to look at where the hit originated. That's basically what they do for guys hitting low, anyway. There was no penalty on Liuget for his hit on Manning last week because his initial contact was to the thigh before he hit Manning in the knee. I think you could apply the same principle to hits around the neck.

It was the right call, no doubt.

That Brees is a short guy has nothing to do with it, the rules are clearly stated.

The MLB story of Eddie Gaedel comes to mind. Four pitches and a walk, all within the rules....

Who knows, I guess you can put in a dwarf at QB (Honestly, no slight towards Brees or Wilson ) and just let him stand back there and get PF 1st downs until you have 1st and goal. :laugh3:

I don't believe the number 1/8 is being used in the NFL and I'm sure Eddie wont mind.

Here's an actual pic of his jersey in the National Baseball HOF...

Wilson would duck him and make a play.

Umm, it actually had everything to do with it. If Brees was 6-5 that hit wouldn't have been at his throat at all. He only got hit in the neck because his neck is lower.

I think you miss my point anyway. I'm not saying it was the wrong call, I'm saying I think the rule should be changed because that shouldn't be a penalty.

But it's not going to change. This is the game that we have.

I get sick of the bitching about bad calls on border-line PFs. That includes my own fanbase. Every Monday morning there seems to be a couple threads on the Seahawks page bitching about ticky tacky calls against our physical team. It comes with the territory and they're not going to reverse this player safety ship that they have invested so heavily in, ever.

But he didn't even hit his throat. The only reason it appeared that way was because his body was tackled and his neck and head were left behind.....

Not blaming the game on that call or anything.... but it was a very bad call at a very crucial moment. No doubt.

Funny that you post that gif to support your claim that it was a bad call. LOL

I think you are the only respondent in this thread that has said that, and you support which team?

Pretty sure your little gif actually shows his shoulder hitting the helmet of Brees so not sure that video supports your view like you think it does. Throw in players know refs are looking for any kind of head movement so why go high?

The game goes at a very fast speed with stronger and faster players nowadays. You go anywhere near the head or neck area, it's going to get called. It may not be the right call, but it had to be made at that moment.

Because it shows it was a bad call... all the contact comes to his shoulder and upper chest... as Bree's body gets taken down his neck and head get left behind which causes the contact.... It was a clean hit.
