I didn't catch that. So if the Panthers suck ass this year, they can let both Mayfield and Darnold leave via FA, maybe collecting comp picks, and pick a QB in the 23 draft.

My understanding of the trade is that the 2024 5th round pick is the guaranteed minimum. It will be upgraded to a 2024 4th round pick if the conditions are met. (The conditions have been posted).

Historically compensatory picks are NOT awarded where a player's contract is altered during the final 12 months of its scheduled run time. Mayfield's contract has been altered to remove $3.5M of guarantees and replace them with $3.5M of incentives. However, the compensatory pick guidelines have historically been applied differently when QBs are involved. The Panthers may be in line for a compensatory pick in 2024 if Mayfield leaves as a FA...or they may not. We won't know until the picks are awarded or the NFL publishes their guidelines.
