This is all pretty simple stuff. Last offseason just about everyone agreed that we needed a 2nd receiver, a starting running back, help in the secondary and a few interior linemen if we were going to be successful.

We ended up with the following....

The crap platter of Binns and Tate.

The Lawfirm.

The good pedigree/no game guys, Newman and Allen. And a DB that many said wouldn't play early even if he was healthy

Zeitler and Wharton.

Point being, we didn't do enough in free agency to improve some of the issues we had last year. Is it all that surprising that we're struggling this year?

Let's break that down...

Binns, Tate, and Green-Ellis are HORRIBLE.

Newman is old and slow and Allen has yet to play snap.

Kirkpatrick has yet to play a snap.

Wharton will not play a snap.

No, it's not hard to see why we suck. In fact, it's an absolute miracle that we've won 3 games. I wouldn't be shocked at all if we finish 3-13. We're that bad.

Bush started some too. He's not been good either. Doesn't make BJGE good. He's been abysmal.

He started one game for sure. Beyond that I'm not sure.

Regardless, neither RB has been very good. We need a game-breaking RB that forces teams to respect play action.

And we aren't gonna see one til at least 2014. Good times. Probably not til 2015.

Playoffs? Playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?! I just hope we can win a game!

This team won't win over 5-6 games this season. Just awful.

I hope they lose out and we're in a position to draft a real QB. I'm sure they wouldn't do that, though. We're stuck with Dalton til his contract is up. When is his contract up?

He'll be extended....Mike Brown is certain he has his franchise quarterback, and Dalton is smart enough to know his career is over as soon as he leaves Cincinnati......he's our boy for the next ten years......

Am I the only person on this board who likes Dalton? I think he can be/will be a good QB. The sack/fumble was on Whit (who has been very lackluster) not Dalton. The pick 6 was on Dalton but Binns certainly could've helped him out there. He's got to limit the mistakes but I've seen some definite progression with Dalton. he's not mired in a total sophmore slump (i.e. Cam Newton who has been just abysmal). I think Dalton, in fact, is at the top of many passing categories. Just needs to limit the mistakes.

Much of that is a product of us having ZERO run game.

which also doesnt help out the QB.

Aaron Rogers, Eli, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, and Peyton Manning all have bad to sub-par running games as well, though.

The sack/fumble was certainly on Dalton. Whitworth can't be expected to hold a block for half an hour. Dalton has been showing terrible pocket awareness all season. He panics too early, or inexplicably holds the ball. He's thrown 9 INTS in 6 games, 3 of them for TDs. He can certainly improve, but right now, he's not very good.

Brady and Manning will go down as two of the best QB's ever. Brees and Rodgers are also HOF caliber. Rivers has Ryan Mathews and Eli has Bradshaw, Brown and David Wilson. Any of those 4 backs would be a huge upgrade to what the Bengals have...hell, I'd even take Jackie Battle.

I'm pretty sure the Saints have been a top 10 run team the last few years. Before last year the Giants are also a big time run team. Rivers ha Tomlinson most of his career and Sproles and when he didn't have a good run game he stunk last year. Also I'd say Brady's run game is pretty damn good. We don't run a system like GB or NE or Manning, we need a run game.

I still think Dalton can be a really good QB. Will he ever be Rodgers or Brady? Doubtful, but he can be very good. D

alton is 4th in yards, ypa, and TDs. 9th in completion % at 66%. However he has the 2nd most INTs with 9. That has been his only downfall this year. He has also been sacker the 4th most with 17.

He is on pace to complete 66% of his passes for 4,600 yards, 8.03 ypa, 32 TDs, 24 INTs, and be sacked 45 times. If he can cut down the INTs that is a damn good year.

Gruden has been Dalton's best friend. The scheme gives Dalton easy passes to complete and piles on plenty of yac. Green has been Dalton's close second best friend. Dalton just has to throw the ball to him when he goes long and the safety is out of the picture or still a distance away, and Green will snatch it whereever it is. This is what has resulted in nice passing stats.

Against the easy defenses the above works out great and will lead to gaudy statistics when we play those teams.

However, the problem arises when we play respectable defenses and they take away Gruden's easy passes and that yac and they don't give Green as much space underneath or overtop.

Dalton simply has not shown the ability to complete passes in double coverage where the ball has to be on the spot. And if you paid attention in the Miami game, even on the single coverage out routes, he was leading his receivers too much away from coverage, and he consistently overthrows his receivers. Some of this can be improved, others - such as completing passes in double coverage - I'm very skeptical at this point.

In my books, this puts him in the same category I used to put Vick in his heydey in Philly (even when Tubbs had him as the best QB in the league at one point). He's a player that will look great against bad defenses, but falter against the good one due to limited passing abilities (as mentioned above). It may keep you around .500 or may even get you in the playoffs, but it won't get you very far in the playoffs.

I see Dalton has a below average QB with the potential to become average or slightly above average.

It won't happen anytime in the near future, but I'm ready to draft the next project, perferably in the first round.

I'm not saying Dandy Andy is anything comparable to those guys, I'm just pointing out that the league has winners and good QBs that don't have running games to fall back on, so I don't think it should be an excuse for us either. And Eli won the Super Bowl with the worst running game in the league last year.
