I'm still pissed off that we didn't sign Matt Hasselbeck in FA, and decided to go with Alex Smith for another year. I don't know if Hasselbeck is better, but he's a former pro-bowler and a Superbowl QB who has much more to offer Kaepernick than Smith. He's played in a WCO virtually his entire career, knows the division, and is a perfect stopgap for Optimus Prime.

Not that it proves my argument, but I was listening to Mike & Mike in the Morning and they were jumping up and down about the fact that we didn't even entertain Matt Hasselbeck. Instead, he goes to Tennessee to be the stopgap for Jake Locker.

I'm really, really sick of Alex Smith holding this franchise hostage every year. I want Kap to start as soon as he knows the playbook. He's much more physically gifted, much more dynamic, and he'll learn absolutely nothing just sitting on the bench watching Smith crumble in the pocket.

Another guy we should've gave a look:

Didn't see that. In that case, ignore this thread. :)

QB Ratings:

Hass
2008 - 57.3 (7 games)
2009 - 75.1
2010 - 73.2

Smith
2008 - x
2009 - 81.5
2010 - 82.1

Smith completes higher % of passes, for a higher avg., with less INTs, and is more durable. All on top of the fact that Hass is a deteriorating carcass.

I could care less about QB ratings in this discussion. We're not talking about which QB is more likely to lead us to the Superbowl, we're talking about who's the better 1-year stopgap QB - and that is unquestionably Matt Hasselbeck in my mind.

Furthermore, the notion that Alex Smith is more durable is an absolute myth that I dispelled on ESPN's board. The last time Alex Smith played a full season without injury was 2006. For Hasselbeck it was 2007. Over the last three years Alex Smith has missed 19 games due to injury, while Hasselbeck has missed 13. But let's not let facts get in the way of the aimless Alex Smith support.

I read this part and all I can do is shake my head...

"At the end of the day, that was my decision. And San Fran would have been attractive for a whole bunch of reasons. And that offense, I believe, is pretty similar. My man Bobby Engram (a former Seahawks wideout) is up there coaching wide receivers. I felt good about that, but at the end of the day, I think my conversation with the head coach and the offensive line here (in Tennessee) ... a lot of stuff just felt really good about it."

I remember too well a time when just about every player in the NFL wanted to wear the red & gold. I desperately miss the swagger this team use to have.

Clyde, anyone who knows anything about the human body knows that Smith is clearly a more durable athlete than hass right now. Your stat is obviously skewed by the one injury that kept Smith out for a season-plus.

Its one thing to want Smith gone if you have better options.....but this whole thing about obviously worse QBs being better options is very strange. Seems to be based more on spite and disgust of Smith than any real objective evaluation.

WE WANT CARR!

Two can argue against facts. If you're ignoring games missed, then I'll ignore QB ratings and say that anyone who knows anything about football knows that Hasselbeck is clearly a better QB, and more importantly a better fit as a stopgap QB for this team.

WE WANT SMITH!

I think Hasselbeck's concerns for the 49ers offensive line were confirmed in the Saints game. I'm not really disappointed that Hass chose Tennessee over the 49ers, I can see why they'd be more appealing to him. With the Titans, he's the starter. With the 49ers, well, I'm sure he heard all the stuff Harbaugh was saying about Alex. From the outside, it sorta seemed like Harbaugh was stacking any QB competition in Alex's favor.

Although, if this Chris Johnson holdout goes into the season. Hasselbeck might have a few regrets at that point. :crutch:

I think Clyde is more interested in Hass's mind. I wouldn't have expected hass to play much better than Smith, but as far as mentoring Kap goes, clyde has a fair point, Has does have a better mind.

A better mind, more experience as a legitimate starter in this league, and more experience in the WCO. On a related note, I also think he's a better fit for Harbaugh's system than Alex Smith, whose playaction and underneath accuracy are actual weaknesses than assets.

At the very least it would have been putting something new behind center. Someone new the fans can gets behind and someone fresh that players can work with. But I don't understand why it's so hard for some people to move on from the car wreck that has been Alex Smith.

The fact of the matter is, once we start Kap, the season is over. How often do rookie QB's lead their team to the playoffs. If you want to endure another meaningless year then lets start Kap. If you want a chance to compete in the division, then Alex needs to start. He is a vet that has seen it all. Aside from a winning record that is. New coach, new system = give him a chance.

yea, i kinda bundled those in as a part of better mind. I think you are right though, Smith's weaknesses will probably be highlighted more in this system. I'm ready to move on from Smith, but while he is here I hope Harbaugh can at least improve some of those things. It would have been nice to have Hasselbeck here to compete though.

I forgot to mention mobility. Harbaugh loves QBs who are mobile and can throw on the run. Smith can't even roll to his left.

Oh man, I sooo agree! Alex is just one HC away from the Super Bowl! It is not his fault we haven't found him yet!

The post had nothing to do with Alex. I had to do with starting a second round rookie. Do you feel comfotable going into the year with that? I sure dont.

Honestly, with what we have on the roster today, who gives us a better chance of winning...Smith or Kap?

How much $$$ did Hass get with the titans? If Harbaugh really thought Hass > Smith than I'm sire they would thrown more money at Hass.

But obviously, Harbaugh thought Smith > Hasselbeck.

If there wasn't a lock out I would have preferred Hass...

jeje... I'm not losing sleep over this. Hasselback isn't a make or break for our offense. Not arguing the mentor part, but for us, definitely not loss by not having him here.

Behind this current OL, the likes of Smith and Prime are needed cause they need legs to scramble.

I hope Prime wins out, cause the way I look at it, both Smith and Prime are rookies to this new offense, open grabs.

Kap has as much chance of leading this team into the playoffs as Smith.
