We have a power bat that could be great if he wanted to, his name is Pablo Sandoval. The problem is him wanting to be that great bat, when he decided to be in a better shape (2009, 2011) he was great putting all star numbers, unfortunately there's the years when he decides not to care and eat the whole country of Venezuela in the winter and he struggles (2010,2012 besides the WS, 2013).

If we could get 2009 2011 Panda this lineup would be so much better, that and Pagan.

You are correct, I often overlook Panda but if he could produce like he has done at times, like an Allstar WS MVP, that's as good as a FA. We could fake it in LF with him hitting and Pagan back. Maybe the contract year in 2014 will do it...

They got their big bat. 5 years ago today in fact.

Buster Posey, the fifth overall pick in the June amateur draft, gets the largest up-front bonus in major league history when he agrees to a $6.2 million signing deal with the Giants. The highly touted catcher gets slightly more than infielders Tim Beckham (first pick/shortstop) who receives $6.15 million from the Rays and Pedro Alvarez (second pick/third baseman) who gets $6 million from the Pirates.

How did the Rays pass on him? He seemed like a shoe-in for them. Though if he was the number one pick, he probably would have made more than the $6.2 million bonus with the Giants, which is probably the main reason the Rays had to pass on him. Too bad for them, I'm not really concerned about it though.

Really, dude?

They got an even bigger bat 20 years ago, kid named Bonds.

I'm kinda looking for a new guy for 2014.

Taxes is a good point that doesn't get enough mention. I am not sure how much it plays, though. The Dodgers and Angels have always been able to sign FAs. And the Giants did not have problems pre-AT&T.

LOL, the Angels might be willing to let us have Puholtz. That contract is starting to look terrible.

Yes really. Instead of creating a stand alone thread to post this, I found one with a title that I thought kind of fit.

Guess I was wrong, like usual......

I am all for a salary cap. As long as there is an opposing salary floor, so teams like the Marlins don't fund their entire payroll off the $$ they get from MLB revenue sharing.

???

It is looking REAL bad sooner than I expected, but it was a bad contract before the ink dried.

The finances of baseball are too complicated to implement a simple cap/floor like other sports use. I think they are starting to try to wade through the muck with the draft and international FA pools, though. I can see a more intense cap/floor system in place within the next 10-15 years. They just need to iron out all the different aspects (IFA, Draft, minors, floor/cap, lux taxes etc)

I was looking at team's payroll th other day. Can't remember the site but was surprised to see the Giant's team payroll is slightly higher than the Angels which was surprising with those big name signings.

I agree that the implemention is years off, if at all. I just always like to chime in on the subject, if only because most talk on the subject is about the cap, and the big spending teams.

I just happen to be of the mind, and if I were king of all things for a day, that it would want all teams to be on fairly equal footing.

Well, we do have three guys making over $20MM; the Angels have none. And I think the Angels payroll is about $500k higher. However, the next three years they're going to dwarf us.

The one advantage here is that with a little flexibility and creativity, that big bat can be virtually any position other than 2B/SS (where we should be good for at least 2014).

If C, move Posey to 1B, Belt to LF.
If 1B, Move Belt to LF.
If 3B, move Panda to 1B, Belt to LF
If OF, Pagan and Blanco can move as necessary. Pence could probably move to LF if we needed him to.

Most of those possibilities would involve lowering the defensive quality at 1B. BEFORE Belt got hot, his WAR was 2.1 - higher than many first basemen with higher average, more homeruns, and higher SLG.

That's how good his defense at 1B is. I'd only want Belt to move if the guy brought in was a HUGE bat AND right-handed batter AND at least an "average" defender. To convince you, look at Adam Dunn. 28 HRs. .342 OBP. WAR of ... 0.6. I don't want Adam Dunn or anyone like him playing for the Giants.

Well said. There may be some tradeoffs required. No point bringing in a guy whose glove will hurt as much or more than his bat will help. And I completely agree that we should have no part of Adam Dunn or anyone like him - unless he's a RHH (just kidding).

Anyone know about Abreu's D at 1B?

I know we are unlikely to sign him, but if his D is at least 0 WAR, we really should consider it.

Crazy question: any interest in bringing back Beltran?

(Damn, that 2014 FA list is sad)
