Wow!

Were there any rumors about this before now?

While I was never that impressed with his managing skills (granted, I don't follow the Rangers that closely), heseemed like a good guy who always had his players behind him.

I hope all is well with him, health-wise. My first thought is that that must be the reason behind this type of sudden departure (again, assuming this is a sudden resignation).

Could this be drugs? Could this be something else personal related? I wonder if management was going to get rid of him after the season anyways and he just decided to leave on his own now.

Really unexpected.

“Today, I have submitted my resignation from the job I love – managing the Rangers – in order to devote my full attention to addressing an off-the-field personal matter. As painful as it is, stepping away from the game is what’s best for me and my family.

“This is in no way related to the disappointing performance of the team this season. We were already discussing 2015 and looking forward to getting the Rangers back to postseason contention.

“I deeply regret that I’ve let down the Rangers organization and our great fans. Over the past eight seasons, it’s been a privilege to be part of some of the best years in club history and I will always be grateful for the opportunities I’ve had here, and for the great management, players, and coaches who have made our time here a success. Thank you for respecting my privacy.”

Kinda looks like a drug/alcohol thing. Totally talking out of my ass, though. Purely reading between the lines from his statement...

Wish Wash the best. Took this team to places it had never even sniffed. Hope everything works out for him with the off-field stuff, but for the organization as a whole, probably a positive change.

Wash, like MY, Kinsler, Cruz, Hamilton, etc... part of a Ranger brand that is no longer around. Even without the injuries, Rangers weren't contending this year. Time to reset, rebuild, and look to 2016-17 as our next shot to play in October.

Wish the man nothing but the best in dealing with whatever personal matter he's dealing with currently (assuming that is the real reason). The cynical side of me says JD made the decision to fire Wash and allowing him to resign now was the club's way of letting their long-time leader save face as well as themselves for firing who many fans still consider to be untouchable. Wash gets to walk away and not be fired and the club is absolved from facing some inevitable fan backlash.

But if it really is a personal problem, I hope he's able to deal with it.

"I deeply regret that I've let down the Rangers organization and our great fans,"

I really hope its not the case for humanity's sake but I think this may be drug related.

That was my initial reaction to that statement too, but then I thought maybe he was just referring to the team's horrible record/play this year. I could see it meaning either one of those things. I hope it's not cocaine again. It sucks to see anyone destroy his life with drugs.

Fuck man. You have 3 weeks. Whatever it is, you quit on us. You had 3 weeks to stick it out. You left. Maybe others see drug issues or something. He left us out to dry, that's how I see it.

I'm sure more information will come out in the coming days but I think it's too early to jump to conclusion to think and assume he quit on the team.

I'm just saying, people are jumping to conclusions that he's hooked on cocaine or something. The way I see it, he's been our coach for 8 years, and he had to go for 3 more weeks. Whatever it was, he could've resigned 1st thing after game 162.

if it is bad enough for him to resign with only 3 weeks left it must be really serious. and we weren't going to accomplish anything with this AAA team anyway

The question I have is one that was finally asked during the news conference and that is would RW have resigned if we were headed to a 90-100 win season.
